Flagging Posts

I do not understand the need for flagging posts. When you think a post is inappropriate, why not just tell the poster instead of this flagging business? If you believe it to be spam, why not just post that? If you find that the poster has decided not to follow your suggestion of deleting post or placing it somewhere else, just send an email to a moderator and he will handle the whole thing.

It has also recently been posted that there is no mechanism for the software to notify a moderator that a post has been flagged. Would it be better to use the "Report Abuse" button. FWIW, I have seen a recent increase in the number of SPAM posts. I consider these to be trolls who are just poking in for a quick post or two hoping that someone will click on one of their affiliate links to generate themselves a couple of quick bucks. They add nothing to the community here - and threaten to leave the posting landscape littered with these useless posts. What's worse is that they use key words - so that their post might be seen if someone does a Google search. So, someone Googling "houston restaurants roadfood" this morning might have found one of these SPAM posts, for instance. My opinion is that it dilutes the value of this site, both for the regular users and even the owners (for risk of someone popping in on a Google search, finding a SPAM post, and leaving disheartened).

Stephen Rushmore, Jr. posted that this feature will be available to moderators when a new version of this message board software has the "bugs" solved.

If you find that the poster has decided not to follow your suggestion of deleting post or placing it somewhere else, just send an email to a moderator and he will handle the whole thing. 1.) Once the original message has been replied to, the O.P. cannot delete or move it. Not to mention that a SPAMer or advertiser won't want to delete it. 2.) The flagging process includes the selection of a category, and the option to send text to the moderators/admins/webmaster. According to The Travelin Man, that actually doesn't work, so the messages that those flagging inappropriate posts send are actually going nowhere!

chewingthefat Can the Moderators see who is flagging? Yes we can. Once the "ticket" system, which alerts moderators that there is a flag, is fixed, inappropriate flags will be easier to spot, and useful ones will be...well...useful. It would be great if members could flag spam posts and have a moderator alerted as soon as he/she checks in. I am hoping this feature gets repaired soon. While it worked it was very useful!

I think instead of flagging, the Moderators should substitute that feature with a picture of someone beating a dead horse..

chewingthefat Can the Moderators see who is flagging? Much more importantly, can the moderators see who isn't wearing any pants?
