Flagging Posts

Once a post has been flagged, does it make any difference if it gets flagged again (yes, ever since we've been innundated with users who are trying to push up their totals so that they can post spam, I've been flagging left and right, but generally not messages that have already been flagged).

    "(U)sers who are trying to push up their totals so they can post spam"? Which users are those you've been "flagging left and right?" And how have you managed to determine their reasons for posting?

    Flagging is ok, but send a note to one of the moderator's also, please.  Sometomes we don't see the flagged thread for awhile, but a note describing the offense will get swift attention.

    Let's see now:
    1) Posts copied and pasted from other sites.
    2) Posts comprised of parroting back keywords from other posts without relation to the topic.
    3) Looking at the user's other posts and seeing that they are all the same sort.
    4) What CajunKing said.

    Using the "report abuse" option? I can see that, especially for posts which are lifted entirely from another site without attribution.

    And don't forget to flag the legitimate roadfooders that commented on the spammer and of course then defend the spammer  like one particular poster did

    What's happening now is that the kitchen spammers are starting to change the titles of legitimate existing threads to kitchens UK stuff...including the spam. When that blows-up automatically...it takes a legitimate thread along for the ride.

    CK had a thread on Nashville pies. Poof. Gone.


    Roadfood may want to disable the ability to change the titles of existing threads.

    I was reading an article about new forms of phishing, and it included a couple of additional reasons for the spamming:
    1) This has been mentioned, but apparently the spam links are good for search engine optimization (SEO).
     
    2) More importantly, phishing links can be "bounced", so instead of a link to the actual site, a link is made that triggers a link left on the message board of this site, bypassing blacklisting methods of preventing attacks. Do note that if spam links are allowed to stay, it can end up with this site being blacklisted.

    Bringing back the topic because of something that recently happened:

    In general, I am of the belief that if someone is allowed to recommend a competitor's service, it is only fair that they should be allowed to recommend their own, as well. However, if the owner of a service recommends his or her own without mentioning that it is his or her own service, I'm going to flag it for moderation. This happened recently, and the user has apparently quit Roadfood in indignation, even though I explained that I would not have flagged it if he had stated up front that it was his product.

    Am I wrong here?

    The solution is to set up a separate forum for people to talk about their food related businesses. That way if someone has an interest in visiting that forum they can-----or not. And it keeps self promotion out of the other threads.

    I think this is less of an issue now that some of the more aggressive self-promoters have been shown the error of their ways. Of course this doesn't keep their surrogates from doing it on their behalf, but I'm not sure how you deal with that other than to recognize it for what it is.

    If a third party wants to recommend another persons business it's no different than someone recommending another persons restaurant.

    Just flagged about 10 posts from yet another copier/paster; s/he even had the chutzpah to steal from a 2 year old forum post right here on roadfood.com. In general, whenever I see someone new posting something that looks simultaneously professional and incomplete, I will grab a key phrase, put it in quotes, and search on Google; it takes all of about 20-30 seconds to find the original source. As I have said before, my best guess is that they want to put in enough posts to be able to post links.
     
    I can see someone with a legitimate business wanting to plug it here; there are even appropriate ways to do it. And there are inappropriate ways which show that they are least trying to do it right (such as responses to requests made several years ago).  But my way of thinking is that if they are going to use dishonest means, then you can't trust their business anyway (in the pre-Internet mail order business, that way of thinking was practically a slogan).
