Flea and Mosquito protection

What do you use?

Everyone was laughing at me in Texas because besides spraying myself with 98% DEET I was also wearing a wrist band and ankle band.

That was after being devoured by some bastard insects.

After stopping at Cabella's (What a wonderful store) and finding things stronger that OFF! I had no more problems.  Off! didn't do it for me.  The fleas liked me in spite of it.

I had one mosquito bite that was larger than a Morgan silver dollar... red and hot.  I was worried I was going to get blood poisoning as it has happened in the past.

How do you protect yourself when the repellent need arises?

Deep Woods Off has always worked best for me, but then I can't say as I've ever been anywhere there were fleas. Here it's mosquitoes and deer flies.

I can't remember the last time I got bit by a mosquito or flea. But, we've had a few people die from eastern equine encephalitis in my area recently, so I bought a can off OFF, which usually does the trick for me well enough.
Back in the day when out camping, we'd use Avon Skin So Soft. All us big guys smelled like pretty little girls, but the bugs stayed away.

I haven't tried the Deep Woods Off.  I'm not sure the full concentration DEET is good for me.

At least I'm not too bothered with the pests here in California.

Have you tried the OFF Clip On? We use that and have no problems with mosquito bites, and our mosquitoes are as big as pigeons. I don't know if it works on fleas.

The commercial for the Off Clip On was what prompted this post.

I looked at it when I was in Texas, but the fact that I needed to buy refills for it turned me off at the time.  It's not cheap.

Watch the sales. I usually buy a handful for a  fraction of the usual price every few months when they are on sale. Walgreens and CVS put them on sale.

You get the clip on to work? I've never talked to anyone who has actually used it, and with how expensive it is I didn't want to waste my money if it was no good. I may try one the next time they're on sale then.

I like to use Deep Woods Off Sportsman. I live in the county and am outdoors quite a bit. I use Advantage on all my pets because that is the only drop that works IMHO, and I have tried them all. I have found that clip ons and candles are a waste of money. Skin So Soft cant touch Deet 30%.
My neice in NJ was told she had Mono for 2 years, she actually has Lymes disease from a Tick bite. Deep Woods Off stinks and tastes bad, but its better than being eaten alive and getting sick from a bug bite.

In the Los Angeles area Advantage works just fine.

In Texas the fleas were so bad that all of us were being bitten.

    Or you taste like olives.

I've used the Repel brand in the past, and as a bonus it smelled like the Off! I remember from the 1970s.  Sadly, I think the fragrance has been changed.

dont laugh until you try it........
take a little fabric softener, and soak a rag with it..... every so often wipe down with the rag, anything that flies and bites will stay away.....

you can also use the dryer sheets softeners, just rub down with one and you will be a believer....
and they smell a hell of a lot better then chemical sprays

Hmmm,  I could just wrap a dryer sheet around my ankles.

Some are allergic to scents so that's not always an option.

At Cabela's I found the heavy duty 98% DEET stuff.  It's probably not healthy but it saved my sanity because I get crazy when bitten.  I'm allergic and sometimes have bad reactions.

Think the next time I drive by Bass I'll see if they carry the DEET products.  I used all mine up and would like some insurance in the pockets of my vehicles.  I carry off there now.

Exactly. I forgot to mention I use the sportsman's formula of Deep Woods Off. I pretty much can't have anything scented or I break out. I wonder if my unscented dryer sheets or unscented fabric softener would work...
