Coming over to Florida from UK this time next year and after doing the Halloween thing going to do some travelling about. Going to places like St Augustine, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Miami, down through the Keys, Naples, St Petersburg. Don't want to end up eating at the usual name and themed places that the rest of Brits end up at, would rather find good little diners/eateries with good food. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

The Shamrock (formerly, The Pub) just south of I-4 on Highway 27 (west of Orlando) is an English style pub that I enjoy greatly.  I'd love to hear your take on the place.  I enjoy the Fish and Chips, Bangers and mashed and their Sunday roasts.

Preston in Lancashire, England, I presume? A very hearty welcome to you.

The archives here are a treasure trove of suggestions. Also, the restaurant directory of this site is helpful. Just go to the main page,
          http://www.roadfood.com/Restaurants/
select Florida, and you should get about 35 places listed.

If you see Rock Shrimp on the menu, order them broiled with butter. They're like small lobster tails.

Welcome to Hollywood in advance.    With that said, one caveat:   Don't go to Le Tub, unless you enjoy being treated badly and dining amongst the bugs.   Their world famous burger is not all that, either.

Nicks on the beach offers a view just feet from the ocean, the staff is nice, and you will fare far better there if you go for a burger.   It's smaller than Le tub, but comes with fries and is several dollars less.   There are no bugs on the ocean side, too.    There's also a Nick's in Hallandale which is known as a breakfast place, with colourful clientele.   I don't think they're related, though.

Just east of Nicks on Hallandale is Flanagan's, which is a small Florida chain, but the food is really good, and the lunch specials are cheap.   It's dark and cozy, with a full liquor bar.   I've been going there for 20 years, and it's as good as ever.   Good service, nice people.

Ocean's 11 on Hollywood beach is less crowded than further south, has good food, free parking (only while you are in their establishment, you can't just leave your car there), and that unbeatable ocean view.   Liz the bartender is awesome.   Full liquor.

If you want crab, you can't beat the Rustic Inn.   It gets extremely crowded during dinner, though.   West of Rustic Inn is the Field, which is an Irish style pub.   The food is good, it's  dark and cozy inside, but also has outdoor seating.  There is no view, but it's a fun and friendly place.    They have live music most nights, I think always Irish.   Full liquor.

Now for the ultimate Hollywood secret:  Tarks, which is just north of Hollywood in Dania.  (Hollywood, Hallandale, and Dania run into each other, it's hard to tell where one begins, and the other ends).  It's a small clam stand with minimal seating, but the menu is huge and cheap, with raw bar items, fried items, and grilled items.  They do a lot of seafood including gator tail,  peel and eat shrimp, and conch salad.    You can sit inside at a counter, where you watch the cooks work, and they socialize with customers while preparing your meal, and are pretty funny.      There is also some counter space outside, and a picnic table.   They've been in business since 1966, and are probably the last bastion of the old Florida seafood shack.

I'm with you on many places your list.  My experience at Inn on the Lakes is that they have better than decent food and sometimes good specials.  I hardly see locals there.  And, as I just posted on the "Talk About Overcharging" thread, unless you enjoy bottom shelf beverages, a visit to Inn on the Lakes REQUIRES an expense account.  If you have time for only one dinner in Sebring, splurge on the Watering Hole (remember, they are cash only).

For RF in Sebring, my standout favorite is the $3.75 Cuban Sandwich at Julio's Market (across from Home Depot).

We've lived in the same county as Dixie for four years, but have never gotten there so I can't comment either way. We've had them at other places in Brevard County. (The last time was a couple of weeks ago at the Lobster Shanty in Cocoa Beach.)

Lots of interesting restaurants in Fort Lauderdale. I like Tom Jenkins for BBQ. I like all the places on the long list that I have actually eaten at, except Pepe's, which was average for dinner. I like BO's across the street for fish sandwiches more. I like the Hogfish grill on Stock Island, and did not think much of the food at the No Name Pub. I love Joe's Stone Crabs in Miami Beach, but the wait can be long. I want to go to Berns in Tampa.

Lots of interesting restaurants in Fort Lauderdale.  I like BO's across the street for fish sandwiches more. I like the Hogfish grill on Stock Island, and did not think much of the food at the No Name Pub.

In a few weeks I'll have about 5 hours to kill in Ft. Lauderdale. Could you tell me a bit more about these places and any others that might be good for lunch? Preferably easy to get to, between FLL and the cruise ship terminal. Taxi or bus will probably be the more of transport. Thanks.

Sorry to hear that, ancient mariner. IF I was flying in instead of sailing, I'd bring you a french dip from Phillipe's the Original.

On our last trip to the Keys, our best meal of the entire south Florida trip was in Key West at Blue Heaven.  Their grouper and yellow fin tuna, along with excellent sides were what justified the 45 minute wait for a table on a Monday evening.

Yes....as a veteran of many incidents with the beef, pork and especially the lamb dips there.....I have never had any at other places that even come close. And the hot mustard....OOH LA LA!
Well, 6 years ago I would have sailed there on an Islander 36 sailboat, but next week I'm going on a slightly larger boat--the Islander Princess. I think it's a little more comfortable way to go through the Panama Canal. As for downtown Downey to Uptown St. Pete.....well maybe I'll have drive a car from the ports. I can't see the cruise ship detouring to St. Pete for lil' old me!

Agreed, and don't overlook the Lobster Benedict for breakfast. Another great local place is Hogfish Grill over on Stock Island.
