Flo's Hotdogs

On my way up to our Maine house for the first time this year, I stopped by Bob's Clam Hut for a lobster roll to go and on my way out I glanced over at The Kittery Trading Post and saw a little buildingin the parking lot with "Flo's " sign, so I turned around and got a Flo's dog to go (I saved the lobster roll for lunch the next day) I liked the dog very much, I have never been to the one further down Rt 1 as I am usually trying to get up to our cottage asap. The relish was good too Cheers KB

I stopped at the original a few years ago with a buddy of mine after ordering a couple of barkers each and seated a one of the outdoor tables we looked at each other and said whats the big deal? Tryed it again last fall to see if I missed something, once again whats the big deal? I must be missing something people were in there ordering 12 and 18 at a time, still can't figure it out not worth the wait she only cooks a small amount at a time. The Moxie thats offered was good though. I'll probably give it another try before the shack falls down if there is no line. The dogs aren't cheap and not overly big looks like a 10 to 1, I just don't get it. Chow Jim

I agree..............I had read so much about Flo's hot dogs that I stood in line twice to get some; the first time because I thought that I was in for a real treat and the second time because I thought I had missed something the first time around. My verdict; (and I love hot dogs) Flo's dogs are not worth the time to eat.

I've been to Flo's once when on vacation in Kennebunkport. Vastly overrated in my opinion. At the time they used a Schultz brand (local) beef and pork dog that is no longer made. It was steamed and had very little flavor. This type of dog would be better grilled or deep fried. They now use a dog called Old Neighborhood, which I hear is similar to the old dog. I don't eat onions, so I had mine with just mustard rather than the onion relish that they are known for.

Other than a rather unique atmosphere...the relish is what makes them worth while.

I've got to stick up for Flo's, the "hot sauce" and mayo are an unusually effective combination.

While not the best dog I've had, there's something about the sauce that is unique. When I'm in the area I always stop. Nostalgic, down-home, out of the ordinary experience. Plus what else would you eat in Maine?? After all the clams, scallops and lobster it's nice to hammer down a few DOGS, with a cold Moxie.

I think you all are missing my point, Flo's seems to have moved to The Kittery Trading Post parking lot, not further down Rt 1, does anyone know is this permanent? Also, the Flo's dog is interesting the combo relish mayo is good but I can see how with just mustard they are rather ordinary. Plus I did not wait in any line, it was near closing time Cheers KB

Hey...maybe we need to move this thread to the chain section...nooooooooooooooo...just kidding!! I agree...a dog from Flo's with mustard isn't a Flo Dog and would likely be quite bland. I have a jar of Flo's relish at home, and it can make even a low fat turkey dog interesting. Low fat...yuch!

I read some place that she/they have opened 3 or 4 places in Southern Maine just reciently. Don't know if they are individually owned or part of the original. It must be the shack thing, people like shacks. Thats the draw. Chow Jim

Well, you could try Bolly's in Hallowell, just south of Augusta on Rt 201. Best 'dog in Maine, IMO. And the rest of the menu isn't too shabby, either. Top

Last time I was in the original Flo's in early March she mentioned they had franchised two other operations. One in Sanford and another at Wells beach. I didn't hear anything about Kittery. This opens up the potential for a Flo's hotdog tour. Drive to four different places to sample the same dog. She was adament the original shack would remain, and the others were franchises, not owned by them.

Seems just like the stuff in the restaurant. I got some as a gift, but when I went to buy some more found it was quite pricey!

Though they were far from the best hot dogs I have ever had, I thought they were quite tasty. When I went to Sanford to get ice cream at Shain's of Maine, there was a Flo's right next door. How many Flo's is there now?
