Food Recalls, What Should I Worry About?

6Star does a great job of posting the food recalls here at Roadfood!
 
I just noticed he posted an ice cream w/ Typhoid Fever. Now that worries me! Next was some Picksweet Breaded Okra w/ undisclosed milk. Oh.. I have some of that! But, should a little undisclosed milk worry me???
 
And what about other stuff w/ undisclosed soy or whatever?
 
Sooo, what should we worry about... and what should we not worry about?

Personally, if it's recalled because of mis-labelling for allergies, I disregard it because I know I'm not allergic to anything that'll kill me.  Ditto "undisclosed" things that are natural ingredients.
 
The ones I worry about are the ones that are recalled because there is salmonella or something similar, bug parts (THAT fiasco took place not too far from home), etc.
 
I think basically it depends on knowing yourself and your family, and knowing what will or will not actually harm them if ingested.

The FDA ( U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and the FSIS (Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture), the two agencies responsible for food recalls generally publicize recalls of three different types.  There are those due to a bacterial infection of some type (usually a result of poor sanitation somewhere along the food chain or inadequate sterilization), foreign matter in the food due to poor inspection during processing (most commonly metal or plastic from processing or packaging machinery, though this can also include "natural" ingredients such as insects, stones, sterms, bone fragments, etc.) and those due to improper labeling (an incorrect list of ingredients on the label). 
 
As has been noted, the first two categories are of more concern to most people, but the improper labeling can be just as deadly as a bacterial infection for some, and these are the people (or their parents) who are the most avid label readers, and whose life depends on the ingredient list to always be accurate.  I know this from experience, since when I was very young I was allergic to most foods (beef, chicken, chicken eggs, all vegetables except peas and asparagus, wheat, etc.) and there were no ingredient lists on foods in those days.

The Pictsweet Company  announced today a voluntary recall of certain codes of store-brand products containing frozen green peas, after the company learned that some of the packages may contain glass fragments, which may cause injury if ingested. No injuries have yet been reported.

Products subject to this recall were distributed only to Kroger stores in the Southeast United States and to Walmart stores throughout the United States.

Well the stuff I have is Pictsweet w/ a T not a K like I said earlier. I guess it's the same stuff. I don't have any peas or mixed vegies though.
 
I understand the allergy deal. Some in my family are allergic to peanuts.
