Food Stand - Hot pockets Thu, 06/5/08 11:47 AM (permalink)
I have been wanting to set up a food cart for a while and was going to do hot dogs or gryos. I want to make it as simple as possible (as I am unable to work there much) so I am considering now selling hot pockets. This would be higher profit margins, lower costs, simpler stand, easier for the workers, and fairly unique. The target deomographic would be college kids as there are many, many bars nearby and heavy foot traffic.

Any thoughts on the idea and best way to heat them up would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Are you talking about the microwave Hot Pockets that are sold in the frozen foods sections at supermarkets?

if you are talking about the frozen supermarket Hot Pockets,
those are gonna cost you about 5 times the cost of a hot dog.

        Hello All,
Scotty, I do not mean to offend, but you are kidding us, right?
On the other hand, I know teens and college kids that love Hot Pockets.
        Anything for a buck.
        Microwave the fecal matter.
        Hope it works out.
        Take Care,
        Fieldthistle

Empanadas, si. Hot Pockets, no. You probably can't use that term for them anyway without some kind of infringement suit.

Not actual hot pockets, but very similar. They are more like meat pies from London, they are doughey on the outside and can be filled with a variety of ingredients on the inside (different meats, veggies)

They cost about 40 cents each in bulk, and can be sold for about 4 dollars. When you take into account the hot dog, bun, toppings, condiments, and manual labor, the hot dog is more expensive and a much lower profit margin.

From what I have experienced at college town restuarants, food stands, vendors, etc, the demand for these or something similar far outweigh the demand for a hot dog.

If the meat pies are like Welsh pasties, I'd buy one

If college students are your target demographic then you have to ask yourself why a college student would pay four bucks for something he can buy frozen for very, very much less in a supermarket or convenience store and toss into the microwave in his dorm room.
