Anyone watch the Travel Channel last night?
Food Wars: Barbecue
Its was over its proper preparation.
Corky's in Tennessee was one the places they talked about.
Anyone ever been there?

They did hit on the major regional BBQ areas- Carolina, Texas, Kansas City and Memphis. I was a bit surprised that Memphis won the "poll" taken at the end using a group of "Cowboys" as the sample group. Lots of footage of PITS and Happy owners and eaters. They included Whole Hog, Ribs and Beef in the descriptions, with no mention of poultry or seafood or (heaven forbid) veggies and fruit. It reminded me of a travelog to a place we have been to many times. Pretty but not 'new'.
All in all it was a pretty good basic Introduction to the BBQ World from a consumer/eater's stand point. I like that view better than one of the competition coverage given to many of the the big BBQ Shows where eating the product doesn't seem to matter as much as the prep and presentation.

I used to watch TC a lot, quit when they got to programs like "Top 10 Toliets of the World" but I have noticed lately that they have been doing some food related shows. My tv guide doesn't list their programs so I'll have to go to their website and check this out! Thanks for jogging my memeory on this!

I've been to the original Memphis location, the airport satellite, and the branch in Monroe, LA. They're all exactly the same, which is good for chains. I like Corky's for the chopped pork sandwich, and Charlie Vergos for ribs.

Corky's food is featured on QVC quite a bit... never tried it though.

They did get a couple of examples of each regions BBQ restaurants. In Texas it was Sonny Bryans, and Rudy's. In Memphis they did Corky's, The Rendevoux, and Interstate and in KC it was Arthur Bryants and KC Masterpiece. My memory has gone blank trying to recall the Carolina location. Sorry (my fault not the programs). Someone please add it as the video of the whole hog was pretty good.
I think the concept of using the employees, owners, and customers as 'stars' of the show as opposed to some Peacock of a Food TV "expert" like Bobby Fray made it a much more pleasant journey thru BBQ Land!
