Food on a stick

Last week the NYTimes had an article on the Minnesota State Fair and stated that one of the specialities was (various kinds of ) food-on-a-stick. 60 varieties were discovered. This year they are trying spaghetti and meatball OAS. What kinds do you know? Corndogs? Beef kabobs? Frozen bananas? Corn on the cob on a stick?

NPR recently did a piece about food on a stick at the Minnesota State Fair. I don't recall all the details, but the general impression was if you can't get it on a stick it is not fit to eat...at least at the fair. The things they managed to put on a stick were both amazing and amusing. Wonder what they are going to feed the RNC? I reckon they are coming to town with their own sticks though.

Food on a stick is a great Minnesota State Fair tradition. This year Big Fat Bacon (on a stick) was one of the new hot items. It was a 1/3rd pound slab of bacon deep fried and coated with a honey maple glaze. I've posted photos of hotdish on a stick and walleye on a stick here in Roadfood.com in previous years. Today was the last day of the fair, BTW. It always ends on Memorial Day after a 12 day run and 1.6 million people. As for RNC overlapping, Mitt Romney was at the fair today campaigning for Michelle Bachmann, a congresswoman. Jesse Ventura was helping the Independence Party candidate for the Senate. Tim Pawlenty, the Governor, was there salving his wounds in not being picked the VP candidate so people think. Politician all have booths at the fair. All the local TV and radio stations broadcast from the fair for those 12 days. The fair pretty much takes over Minneapolis/St. Paul so much that the Minnesota Twins got out of town for a 15 day road trip.

Here is a YouTube presentation of 59 foods-on-a-stick from the Minnesota State Fair, though with some of them it is a little hard to hear what the food is, due to background noise: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-5Lr2IhB_o

Ever since it was "invented" and posted here on Roadfood a couple of years ago, our Scout troop has been offering s'mores-on-a-stick as one of our food items at our concession stand at the Fort Crevecoeur Rondezvous. They have been very popular.

Yesterday's Wall Street Journal had an article about the resumption of whaling in Iceland (Minke whales, which are apparently plentiful) and whale meat's return to Icelandic restaurant tables. One place does whale brochettes called "Moby Dick on a Stick."

At the annual Wurstfest in New Braunfels, TX, one of the most popular eats is Wurst (German sausage) on a stick They slide a big roll on first to catch any errant grease, then impale the sausage. Best when you run a long line of German mustard up the sausage first, then grab a big pitcher of an adult beverage'.

A coworker has a lunch wagon they take to events. One thing she has made is taco on a stick. She takes her seasoned ground beef and forms it around the stick. Then she dips it in a cornmeal batter and deep fries it. Once out of the cooker, she dips it in cheese sauce and then rolls it in chopped lettuce, onion and tomato. She has taco sauce in packets for people to drizzle on top if they want.

Haven't finished the trip report yet, but we sampled several foods-on-a-stick at the Iowa State Fair a couple of weeks ago - 2 memorable items - a "corn-brat" - essentially a bratwurst encased in corn-dog batter, and a "nut bar" - big chunk of nougat, rolled in caramel, rolled in nuts, dipped in chocolate...YUM.
