Ok, we all enjoy sharing destinations but what do you like to eat while driving? We just returned from a 3 hours drive to visit the in-laws and talked about how we never travel unless we have Pringles in the car. Keeps us going between those road food finds.

I don't have specific "road foods" but do have an anecdote of sorts: my in-laws, both of whom are in their mid-60s and in spectacular physical condition, have over the years declared a policy that "food you eat in the car doesn't count" as far as calories are concerned. So, while they are truly careful and healthy about what they eat as a general rule, their road trips (such as their upcoming journey home to South Florida from their summer in Cape Cod) tend to resemble traveling bakeries and delis.

When I hit the road, my restaurant meals often resemble a nutritionist's worst nightmare. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

To counter, I keep my car stocked with bottled water and fresh fruit, lots of it. I prefer berries and tropicals because those types are more fun to eat, but in a pinch apples and pears, the old standbys, will do.

3 hours. Is that the perfect distance away to have in-laws? I've found salty things require drink things which require bathroom breaks....... and then the three hours becomes 4 1/2 hours after all the rest stops. Of course, that doesn't stop us from cheese, crackers, pepsi, coffee, chips of some kind and fruit, usually apples and bananas to stem the urge to stop at the golden arches.

I like some good beef jerky with enough "fight" in it to keep the chewing interesting. I always have to have something to drink, also. Although that results in more stops, it relieves the tedium of the Interstate. I've actually found some interesting places to stop that I might not have if I hadn't had to "go".

Not much of one to do any eating or drinking while traveling, but if consume anything its usually a pack of some sort of cheese crackers and a caffine-free diet cola.

When my wife and I go on a road trip we like to get a ring bologna and some crackers, cheese, sodas, and she'll slice off bologna and eat it with crackers. When the kids were little we did the same thing.

Peanut Butter crackers, drinks, party mix ( I like to make a batch before we go on a trip). My Mom always makes dried apple pies-handheld
to eat while on the road.

                      What time of day?

                      Morning: donuts and sweet rolls
Afternoon: snacks, including, pretzels, PB on crackers right form a box, cookies, whatever
Evening: nothing. Either on the way to dinner or just had some.

My most common trip is to see the folks and I have particular places I stop at all the time. thie items include:

                        Donuts and Coffee
Corned Beef Sandwich and a black and white cookie
                        Pizza and Falafel
                        Fried Chicken

Always bring plenty of fruit/vegetables and water too. My main philosophy on eating while driving is just because you are moving, does not mean your food should suffer. Just requires some learning to eat a piece of chicken while moving 80-85mph down the highway.
