That's just great, Marlene.  My stepfather wrote out the letters for me a very long time ago.

Don, I had it on my license plate for my father.  He also used to tell us that one when we were kids.

Brad, you almost got what people thought it was.

I saw one yesterday but I wasn't quick with my camera.

    It read:  ELXRFXR

I couldn't believe when I saw another this morning.  I could get killed doing this!

    That should have been mine.

Here is the full conversation, perhaps from before WW2:

    FUNEM?
    SVFM
    FUNEX?
    SVFX
    OKMNX

Read it with an eastern european accent.

    Eff you any 'em?
    Ess, vee ef 'em.
    Eff you any ekks?
    Ess, vee ef ekks.
    OK, 'em 'n ekks.

When I saw the title of this thread I immediately thought of Idaho (I do not often think of Idaho), where EVERYBODY's license plate says "Famous Potatoes".

Parked outside a Dairy Queen yesterday in Newburgh, NY was a car with "DQ" as it's vanity plate - the car  was a Mercedes - guess owning a DQ is not a bad business, and about 3 months off in the winter.

    Cheers, John

    CUPCAKE
PNT BTR - ? peanut butter
    BURP
    WINE O

Hope this helps! I've got a pocket notebook in my truck where I've written down interest plates for years.

Not so much a foodstuff, but most definitely a consumable, the best plate I've seen was one in Florida (where else) that read, SPLIFF. It must have slipped by the license plate censors. pb
