Football is becoming basketball

What is going on? Michigan beats Illinois 60 something to 60 something. Every time you get the ball you go the length of the field and score and then the other guys do the same. I learned to hate basketball for that reason, and now football is going in the same direction. We go from silly soccer games where no one scores to sillier football games where there is no defense at all. Does anyone play defense any more? Oh well Zenyatta is on soon ----she had better win.

It was a triple overtime game and Michigan beat Illinois 67 to 65 because they made their 2 pointer and Illinois didn't. The regulation time ended in a 45 to 45 tie.

mr chips Neither Michigan nor illinois is very good. No they really aren't. But they are playing tougher schedules than Oregon. Most teams are.

With a final score of 67-65 you'd think a whole bunch of league records would've been set but so far I haven't seen any mentioned, so apparently they've all been at the school level. If that's really the case I'm wondering what Big Ten game featured more than 132 points or also had both teams scoring more than 60! I guess Illinois' freshman QB is supposed to be pretty good; I heard he was one of the top high schoolers coming out of Missouri last year. Brad

I'm not envious. I'm not even an SEC fan of any kind, but Auburn should clearly be first. There are too many teams (Oregon, TCU, Boise State, Utah) that are highly rated because they are playing such weak schedules. Utah, was exposed today, by another team playing a cush schedule- Utah should drop out of the top 20.

And today Auburn played traditional powerhouse Chatanooga. USC and Stanford are very good teams and Oregon beat them both. And Oregon crushed SEC's Tennessee which had a fluky close loss to LSU, conqueror of Alabama. The PAC 10 is not a weak conference and I've grown a little weary of hearing how it is. It's not like the SEC's Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, South Carolina or Mississippi are significantly better better than their PAC 10 counterparts and this year Florida and Alabama are not the powerhouses of the past. I think the one legitimate anti-Oregon arguement is that Oregon does not play a conference title game which is a trap awaiting the best SEC teams.

I forgot that Auburn's strong schedule this year includes Louisiana-Monroe and Arkansas State, traditional NCAA powerhouses that I'm sure Oregon would have had to struggle to defeat. And Auburn barely defeated the 5-4 Clemson Tigers of the weak sister ACC. The argument that Auburn has played a much tougher schedule than Oregon does not stand up to scrutiny .

Auburn has had to beat presently ranked teams Arkansas, South Carolina, Mississippi State, and LSU, with Alabama still to come. Oregon? They've beaten what looks like a good Stanford team and a middling and unranked USC team that hasn't even beaten a ranked opponent, and has only beaten 2 teams with winning records. USC is not a very good team this year, and nor is the PAC-10 as a conference. Oregon may yet be very good, but there just isn't as much proof of it with Stanford as their only quality win. I suppose it's convenient to gloss over the 4 ranked teams that Auburn has played and beaten, and point out the weaker teams that they played, while ignoring Oregon's wins over patsies like New Mexico and Portland State. Crushing two-win Tennessee is no great shakes. Its quite clear that Oregon has played a weaker schedule, and 6 rated SEC teams to 3 rated PAC-10 teams with good teams like Georgia and Florida unrated bear that out. The PAC-10 is more similar to the ACC than it is to the SEC.

SEC apologists always think it is the best conference and i do not doubt that Auburn is a very good team. Oregon, like all of the SEC teams, has played some cream puffs this year, which makes some of its numbers a little suspect. I'm not even sure that Oregon will beat Cal and Oregon State on the road or Arizona at home. I hope Oregon will win out and play another good team for the title. My hope is that it will be Boise State or TCU just so I can hear the howls of SEC fans that their two loss seasons are far superior to any unbeaten season in another conference. And I wish there was a division one playoff so this discussion would be pointless.

With scores going crazy ----i.e. Navy 76 points yesterday, Boise and TCU averaging 50 points -----I think football has changed. Defense is an afterthought, or offenses have just become too good. The Michigan-Illinois game was crazy. But, I guess it is more fun to watch that game than a 0-0 thriller. One ting is for sure----no one can sit down at a game anymore---a TD can be scored from any point on the field at any moment. Oregon----Auburn---TCU ---- Boise all look good for the National Championship but what in the world happened to Texas----Kansas St had 0 (nada, nil, none, zero) yards passing and beat Texas by 40 points---- Hard to figure. Penn St down 21-0 comes back and scores 35 in the 2nd half to win the big one for JoePa. Way to go (out) Joe.

I don't like the SEC and I think their fans can be pretty obnoxious (especially the Gators). It's bothersome that teams like TCU, BSU and Utah can play easy schedules, win out, and then wait for better teams to get picked off as they move up in the rankings. Oregon did beat a tough Stanford team, but they just don't have the body of work to justify their #1 ranking, while a team like Auburn has beaten 4 ranked teams, with a game still to come against Alabama plus a potential SEC championship game. Meanwhile, TCU and Boise State play no one while they wait for Auburn to take a fall from their difficult schedule. I don't put Oregon in with TCU and Boise State.
