Frank Pepe's coming soon to New York

...well, New York State anyway. According to our waitress at the Manchester, CT location, Pepe's is opening a restaurant in Yonkers. Perhaps the administrators are going to move all Pepe's discussions to the Franchise and Fast-Food section???? By the way, I had the clam pie (ordered WITH mozz, despite strenuous objections from the waitress) in Manchester on Sunday and it was spectacular.

we nyer's should be so lucky. they must be able to build a coal oven in yonkers- it's my understanding that inside the 5 boroughs you can only use a preexisting, grandfathered coal fired oven. enjoy fb

Why on Earth would you insist upon cheese on a clam pie?

Nope. Yonkers is a seperate city, not part of the Bronx.

FYI: Yonkers is not a part of NYC. It borders the Bronx (a borough of NYC), is the largest city in Westchester County and the 4th largest city in the State of New York. The Bear

As an ex New Yorker living in Dallas, I would die for a clam pie. But, I would refuse it if it came with mozzarella on it!

Any mention of where in Yonkers? (Since we moved from that city, Peter Kelly opens a place & now Frank Pepe's pizza is coming to town. This just doesn't seem fair.)

For those of you that are devastated that anyone would dare to eat something that isn't exactly the way YOU like it, it really breaks my heart to dissapoint you, but I shall somehow go on with my life. I order my Pepe's Clam Pie with mozzerella because I LIKE IT THAT WAY. I will occasionally put ketchup on a hot dog too.

That is great news - I've dying to try a clam pie! As new resident of Yonkers, I'll do my best to figure out the specifics (where & when)

I also like my clam pie with some mozzarella and make them that way at home sometimes.

I'm there next time I'm up in Bergen County. When is the place scheduled to open? I have wanted to try a New Haven pizza for years!! Now, it will be within reasonable driving distance.

From the FP site... YONKERS, NY (August 4, 2008) – Bigger Slice: Storied Pizzeria Heads to Yonkers. Pizza connoisseurs of New York, take note: a popularly acclaimed family enterprise in Connecticut will venture across the border into Yonkers next spring to open the first of several pizzerias in Westchester County. Also coming soon to the Mohegan Sun!!!! Oh...gambling and great pizza!!! Sounds like a great mini-vacation to me.

The Warburton Ave high rise apartment we lived in (with a pool in the back) is now mostly section 8. My parents were both Yonkers natives, born and raised, though. So maybe it's making a comeback again, espescially from those getting priced out of Manhattan and Brooklyn?

quote:Originally posted by Pigiron ... Perhaps the administrators are going to move all Pepe's discussions to the Franchise and Fast-Food section???? That would be only fair, right? As I know I've had worthy type establishments get moved over to "fast food", because there was more than one location of them. I'm sure there would be a "mourning" period going on among those Pepe's devotees, before facing the sad reality. (which is that often quality, etc..tends to get lost in translation as each location gets added) Then some will end up being better than others, etc.. Pepe's has 2 other locations already open, so let's face it, it's a CHAIN now!! (after all these years, who would guess?!?) That's like the Old Homestead Steak House in NYC. Their original opened in 1895, and their 2nd location did not open till 2003 inside the casino I work at in Atlantic City.

We went back for a visit last fall & went to Peter Kelly's X2O on the Yonkers pier. I could not believe the changes to that area. See for yourself at: http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2008/03/09/realestate/0309-LIVI_index.html . X2O is on the top 2 floors of the pier. The views are incredible and the food makes you forget about the views.

There is a clam casino pizza that is popular around here where shrimp and bacon make a appearence. I like it with cheese. I will also put mayo along with ketchup sometimes on my hot dog. Here is some real heresy: ketchup and mayo, with beans, cheese and roast chile for my version of a Arizona dog. mark

I think that Pepe's will be spreading themselves too thin soon. The Mohegon Sun venture bothers me enough. Shortly you will be able to find them in your grocery freezer section next to Mystic Pizza. mark

Enjoyed the Yonkers slide show; thanks Cavandre! Even Main St. is looking good. How's that Riverdale Ave doing? I like the way you the describe that the "food makes you forget about the views". (cause too often a real good view tries to cover up for less than adequate food)

It's like droping a stone in a pond & watching the waves ripple out. There are several 8-10 story condo buildings around the Metro North station. I'm sure more are planned. You're less than a 30 minute train ride to mid-town Manhattan, so as the ad says, that's priceless. I don't know how many "down town Yonkers" revival plans I lived thru in 50+ years living there, but this one seems to be taking.
