I'll be at Fred's.
By then you'll know if you're going back to I Fest or not, right?

I'll be happy to lead anyone on a Greendale tour. The new Panther Pub is open and hoppin', and has outdoor seating, too, which is nice.

I'll text Gyp today and see if he'll be in town or not.

Yup, I'll be meeting you at Fred's.  I plan to go down a bit early and stop at River Valley Ranch to shop for some of their kick-butt mushrooms and condiments.

Oooo...River Valley sells shiitakes and oyster mushrooms!  I just might see you there, and according to Google Maps there's a well-reviewed restaurant called Local Folks right down the road.  Thanks for mentioning it!

We'll know for sure what our "after Fred's" plans are following Friday night's Irish Fest performances.

Well, at least it'll be easier to get a table with just 5!  Hopefully they'll be able to make the Chicago architecture tour in October.

Perhaps Pancho, Cousin-ick, ALLGOOD, and some of the other names-without-faces would like to join us!

And don't forget the Milwaukee tour in September.

Yes!  All are welcome!  Please let us know if you'll attend so we can get a big enough table.

Speaking of which, it's time to do a head count:
cousin-ick - 1 (possibly more?)
X1 - 1
cjucoder - 1
stricken_detective - 1 (if she can get a ride)
ScreamingChicken - 1
BuddyRoadhouse - 2 (possibly 4--Our "non-Roadfood" daughter and her fiance might join us.  Hope to have confirmation soon.)

Total so far: 6, possibly 8.

Saturday at Fred's and Irish Fest is looking like a no-go for me and Sancho Panza. We will probably take advantage of reduced admission rates tomorrow (Thursday) for Irish Fest, though. BTW, Carlos Nunez, a highly acclaimed bagpiper from the Galicia region of Spain, will perform each day of Irish Fest; tomorrow he plays at 7pm. I don't know if you like his style of music, but I recommend dropping by to hear him, if you can.

Hi Kidz, I'm on dial-up, what time at Fred's in Burlington?

I really need to catch up on some yard work but if I can squeeze in a burger run, I will!

No Irish Fest for me.

BTW, all:  It looks like the AHEPA "OPA" Greek Festival in Hales Corners is taking place this weekend. Sancho Panza and I may be able to attend later in the afternoon, in case anyone else here is planning to go and wants to meet up.

Arriving at Fred's 1:30-2:00 (allowing for FIB traffic), after that who knows.  How many seats shall I put you down for?

RE: Fred's in Burlington, WI 2013/08/20 09:03:30 (permalink)
Cjucoder mentioned River Valley Ranch earlier in this thread so that's where my day started, in the booming metropolis of Slades Corners.  And after seeing the sign for Slades Corners it took hours to get Run Runaway out of my head...

But before River Valley I stopped at Local Folks for a snack.  It's your typical small-town combination bar and restaurant.

I arrived just as the breakfast-lunch changeover was occurring and the kitchen was running behind, so I had to wait awhile for my BPT to arrive.  It was pretty good and I think it was hand-breaded, as I could taste a hint of what I thought was flour.

From there it was off to River Valley Ranch.

River Valley's reputation was built on mushrooms but that's not the only thing grown.  While I was there several people purchased some of these tomatoes.

Other artisanal products are also available...

...including portobello-and-Swiss brats from Wilson Farm Meats of Elkhorn.  River Valley was offering them for lunch while I was there so I coughed up the cash for one.  After all, Fred's was still a good 10-15 minutes away and I couldn't risk hunger-induced fatigue before I got there.

This was a very good brat and I wound up buying some to take home.  They're made with pasteurized process Swiss cheese instead of the real thing that I'd prefer, but in this case it's a good choice for melting and consistency purposes.

From there it was off to Fred's, where we started with appetizers of fried pickle spears and cheese curds.

I hadn't had the Cajun burger for a couple of years so I ordered the 1/4-pound version, which was nicely seasoned and not too spicy.

Cjucoder and X1 each had the cheeseburger with what I believe was cheddar.

And the BuddyRoadhouses split a horseradish burger.

Sure seems like we didn't order very much, doesn't it.  Well, there was a reason...

Buddy had noticed a sign in the window of John's Main Event proclaiming that Burlington's best burgers could be found inside, so before we ordered at Fred's we decided to turn the day into a burger tasteoff.

Instead of sitting inside we chose to dine al fresco in the beer garden behind the building.  It was a cozy setting with ivy on the walls and the fence, which thankfully didn't attract any Cubs fans while we were there.

Our hero has arrived!

Cjucoder and I split a double cheeseburger, which contains the same amount of beef (1/2 pound) but more cheese than the single-patty version.

That's one of John's very good homemade potato chips underneath the burger.

X1 chose the hangover burger, which is topped with a fried egg and some bacon.

The Roadhouses split a patty melt, which for some reason I ignored.

John's burgers are good in their own right, but they're different from Fred's in that they have a sort of grilled flavor, as if they might've been cooked over a gas flame instead of on a flattop.  Next year we should hit John's first and then Fred's, to see if that changes opinions.

Sorry for flaking out on this great meet-up. 70 hour work weeks kinda kill my weekends. Being on dial-up also makes it hard to post updates.
Hope to meet some of you folks soon.
I'm hitting Mib and Viv's in Lannon for broasted chicken Saturday and really hope to get to SeafoodFest in Menasha on the 7th of Sept.

Sorry to post so much non-related info but I need to post when I can.

We kept looking for you ick-aroo,hoping you'd show up.  Someone asked, "If we've never met him, how will we know what he looks like?"  The solution: We kept mentioning the word "Roadfood" rather loudly, figuring, if anyone turned and looked our way, it must be you.

I don't think anybody looked, but if they did, they were probably thinking, "Who are these peculiar people."  And they'd be right.

Well look at this!
The reply window loaded the 1st try!
Thanks for thinking of me Buddy!
From the partial pics I can see, the burgers looked pretty darn good.

I'm off to try to post a comment in the chicken thread.

RE: Fred's in Burlington, WI 2014/08/01 14:18:41 (permalink)
It's getting to be that time of year, so I thought I'd reignite this thread.

Our annual visit to Fred's hits on Saturday, August 16th.  It'll be the usual plan for us: Depending on the talent lineup at Irish Fest, we'll determine if we head up that way after Fred's, or make a day of meandering southeast Wisconsin.  Either way, we're hoping to spend as much time as possible with as many friends as can join us.

We've got another decision to make this year: Do we start at John's (as referenced above), and get a fresh start there, or do we go the usual route and start at Fred's?

I'm thinking a 2:00pm start time.  Any thoughts?  Who's in?

If you make John's the first stop you could start earlier than 2:00 and have one meal knocked out by the time Fred's lunch rush is over.  Although people coming from the west could hit Annie's Burger Town in Elkhorn before anything else.

Speaking of Elkhorn, if Irish Fest is a no-go I'd like to get your opinion of the pizza at Holi Cannoli, which opens at 4:00 on Saturdays.

Not so much an adventure, CK, as an annual event.  Some years we draw 15-20 people, other years it's only a handful.  Everyone is always invited, so drive on up to DairyLand and join the fun.

There's strong talk of a bridal shower for my younger daughter going on that day, so it might just be the men of the Roadhouse clan making the trip.  We'll see how it all shakes out.

BTW, that waiter does bear a solid resemblance to at least one character John Goodman has played.  IIRC, there was some question about his gender at first.

Mr. Buddy Roadhouse, please pick up the nearest white courtesy phone...  (Do fancy hotels and restaurants even have these anymore?)

I'm in for one if this shindig's still on.  Otherwise Google Maps is encouraging me to spend part of my Saturday visiting the Elk Restaurant in Elkhorn.

It's on as far as I'm concerned.  I may put out a wider call via PM to those Contingent members who don't regularly hang out here anymore.  If anybody's on Facebook, maybe put a mention there.

I'm not sure I can attend this year. I may make the call on Saturday, even. I'm waiting for my family to decide if they are going to Mykonos in Niles that day or possibly even Boston Fish Market. If they're going, I'm tagging along. If not, I'll be at Fred's. I'll keep y'all posted.
