Visiting some friends soon in Fredericksburg for a weekend...any suggestions on local places? (I have heard Carl's Ice Cream is yummy.) Thanks!

Allman's BBQ and Carl's are two spots I almost always hit whenever i'm near Fredericksburg. It's better to go early than late to Allman's as they often sell out. They also sell the coleslaw dressing to go. I think it's excellent slaw. Also love how the orders get zinged into the kitchen on a wire. Links below to both places. Plus, there's the excellent in Woodbridge, Virginia (as highlightedhere) and located just north of Fredericksburg also off of I-95.

Count me among the fans of Carl's Frozen Custard. In the most recent Roadfood book, the Sterns recommend both Allman's BBQ and Goolrick's Pharmacy for milkshakes and ice cream.

You could give Tim's Rivershore (Well actually Tim's II) a try. Not far from Fredricksburg at all. Excellent dive for seafood and right on the river to boot! It's a motorbike ride destination that a group of friends and I do at least 5 times a year. www.tims2.com

*** NEW FREDERICKSBURG, VIRGINIA FIND *** Paul's Bakery 2008 Lafayette Boulevard, Fredericksburg, Virginia 22401 540 / 898-2173 While I have not yet been there, I've twice had the good fortune of having doughnuts from there and let me tell you unequivocally, these are the Round Rock Doughnuts of the east. Hand-made, yeasty, moist and with an outer light crunch. Simple perfection. The place (adjacent to R&R Seafood which I've also been longing to visit) clearly has both a great product (apparently cakes, pies, cookies and breads, too) as well as a loyal following. I can't wait to visit the place in-person.

I was going to go out and find some magnificent Peking Duck in Northern VA today as my kids were all set to go with their grandfolks this weekend. But as of 6PM last night plans changed when they were both diagnosed with sinus infections and the older with a stomach bug. So as a consolation I am thawing a pork shoulder and am going to try my hand at Cantonese Roast Pork (tomorrow, since it needs to marinate all night ) But I will definitely keep these places in mind if I ever get a free non kid day where I dont have to work . PS - wouldn't change anything for the world though, love my kids. :)

The Chinese place I was thinking of is The Fortune Gourmet on Caroline St. (F'bg's old town "main drag").

It's funny. I've been to both Carl's and Allman's and been underwhelm by both. Carl's was good, but I've had equally good frozen custard other places. And I'm not a big " enjoy the wait-in-line" person. Allman wasn't te worst BBQ I've ever had, but it was darn close. Grey - in apperance and taste (until you put the sauce on - that was good). Almost no smoke flavor. I'd be willing to give it another try only because we were there on Mary Washington Graduation Weekend.
