Fred's in Burlington, WI

The Roadhouses are planning on going to Irish Fest in Milwaukee, both Friday and Saturday this week, August 11th & 12th 15th & 16th (I was looking at the wrong spot on my calendar-thanks Brad Olsen for the clarification). We're thinking about stopping at Fred's for "The World's Best Hamburger" on Saturday before going up to Milwaukee. Who's interested in putting together a group to meet up at Fred's sometime in the mid to late afternoon? What time works best for everyone?

Of course, anyone who wants to continue the journey to Irish Fest is welcome to join us there, as well.

I love Fred's! If the weather is nice on Saturday we may ride over to Burlington on the motorcycle. We probably couldn't meet much later than 2 pm. Loyd has to be back in New Glarus by 5 pm to work. Hopefully some more roadfooders will be able to make it!

According to my calendar Friday and Saturday this week are the 15th and 16th...they were the 11th and 12th last month.

Well, the weather is looking good for this weekend. We'll plan on leaving New Glarus around noon, which would put us in Burlington between 1:30 and 2:00. We'll have our Tofflers Pub & Grill "uniforms" on so you should be able to recognize us. See you Saturday!

2.00 is the latest this shindig should take place. Only because I figure:
Meet at 2.
Lunch - 1 hr - 1-1/2 hrs (3:00/3.30)
Drive from Burlington - Summerfest grounds: 1 hr (4.00/4.30 PM)
You'll need to find parking, stand in line, and all sorts of stuff, which brings you to 5 PM, and the end of the "get in free" time.
I'd like to meet at 1 (preferably), or 1.30, just to be safe.
I'm not joining the Irish Fest contingent, though, so it's up to all y'all.

Let's not get our days confused folks. Friday is the free admission day at Irish Fest (3:00-5:00pm); Saturday is the day we're talking about meeting at Fred's. No free admission on Saturday, so no problem with meeting at Fred's whenever it best suits the group.

We can make a 1:30-2:00pm meeting time at Fred's on Saturday if that is good with everybody else. We would then continue up to Milwaukee whenever things break up in Burlington, no hurries, no worries.

As for Friday, we'll get there as close to 3:00pm as possible. We usually head straight for the big rainbow structure near the information booth, where we sit and decide which acts we want to see. If anyone wants to hook up with us on Friday, that's the easiest time and place to find us. If we miss each other there, not to worry; over the years we've run into plenty of folks we know, just by chance, even in that mad mass of humanity.

So, unless someone else objects, that sounds like the schedule (such as it is); Friday afternoon at roughly 3:00pm inside the grounds at Irish Fest, Saturday 1:30-2:00pm at Fred's in Burlington and on to Milwaukee from there.

If anyone has a better plan, we're open to suggestions.

Sounds like 1:00pm is the magic hour. We'll do our best to be there at that time, but closer to 1:30 is more realistic. Don't wait for us, just save us three seats at the table.

Today, we'll be leaving Chicago between 2:00-2:30pm with the goal of being there just before the gates open with free admission at 4:00pm. Once again, if anyone wants to make a point of hooking up, from the main entrance, we'll make a beeline to the rainbow structure near the information booth.

Fred's is indoor seating only, as far as I know.

Well, we did go to Burlington, and we tried to squeeze ourselves into Fred's at about 1:40, but one look at the line of people waiting to order and the lack of seating and we knew we wouldn't be eating before we had to leave to come back. So we headed back west.

Sorry we didn't get to meet everyone. We were really looking forward to it. We did find a nice neighborhood bar in Edgerton on the way back. It looks unassuming enough from the outside.


Inside it was obious someone dropped a lot of money into remodeling. There was new pine panelling on the walls, new tin ceilings, ceiling fans and about 6 large flat panel tv's on the walls. They also have a cozy outdoor eating area that is nicely landscaped. We opted for the air conditioning.

They were advertising their new menu so we decided to check it out. Loyd got the Italian beef with hot peppers and a side of cheese fries.


He loved the beef and the peppers were great. As for the cheese fries, in his words "everything tastes better with nacho cheese". I opted for a burger, since I was in the mood for one, with a side of onion rings.


The burger was of the frozen variety but was still thick and juicy. It certainly was no Fred's burger! Overall, we were impressed with the Horeseshoe Tap and will be back. It's about time Edgerton got a decent place downtown. Can't wait to see posts from those who actually got to eat at Fred's!

I'm surprised you didn't see us. We were still waiting for people around that time. We finally decided to order, as it didn't seem you two were going to show up.

Last fall there was a story in the paper about a bar that was going to open and the owners had future plans to expand into a full restaurant, but that never materialized and the place seemed like it closed very shortly after it opened. The Fox Point Grille (we had a decent meal there once) on the corner has been closed for some months now, too. Hmmm...I wonder if a genuine horseshoe sandwich would sell in Edgerton.

Sorry that Fred's didn't work out for you. The burgers and appetizers were all very good, including MFL's homemade beef jerky and Mrs. MFL's homemade dill pickles. And the company was excellent as well!

MFL, I don't think I have ever drooled over photos so much! Those burgers had all of my favorite add ons... blue cheese...horseradish...garlic...heaven!!! And the homemade chips and onion devils looked like heaven too! I am so sorry that when we were in Burlington in May to go to the Mushroom Ranch that we went to The Charcoal Grille instead, we saw Fred's but didn't turn fast enough. We need to make a trip to Fred's soon! Thanks for the photos!

Huge disappointment that you did not make the effort to find us at Fred's. At 1:40 I think we were still putting our order together, getting ready to bring it up to the counter. As you walked in we were probably looking right at you, but, having never met, didn't know who you were to call out your name. So sorry it didn't work out.

I hope we'll see you at the Cheese Days in Monroe this September. The Roadhouses and the froemans will be there on Sunday. Can't speak for the rest of the group, but I hope they'll join us that day. I know if Sunday is not an option for the Milwaukee crew, many of them will be there on Saturday.

Let's try to do this again. I know after our lunch at Fred's, everyone was thinking, "Why don't we come here more often?"

P.S. We made some other interesting food discoveries while walking the streets of Burlington. The MilwFoodlovers are having lunch this afternoon at the Sci Fi Cafe, which at first glance would appear to be just a gimmick. However, upon close inspection of their eclectic menu, we decided they were definitely worth a try. I hope MFL will post a review and photos here for all to see.

OK, upon viewing the pics we probably were looking right at you but didn't have enough of a description to know it was you (and not wanting to go around to all the tables and ask "are you from roadfood?"). I was hoping someone would notice our Tofflers t-shirts. But the Mr. is not real tolerant with crowded noisy places (probably why we live in a town with a population of 2000), so we were out the door before anyone could see us.

I should be around Cheese Days weekend. When it gets closer, let's try to set up a time and place. See ya!

The weekend following Korea Fest in Chicago, we will be heading back up to Wisconsin for Milwaukee's Irish Fest.  Since meeting up at Fred's worked out so nicely last year, I thought we might try to make it an annual event (as much as possible).

So, who's available for Burgers at Fred's on Saturday, August 15th?  Naturally, anyone who wants to head back to Irish Fest with us for the rest of the day and evening will be more than welcome!

August 15 is the start of my vacation week, but we may be able to join the fun.

I was wearing my "Fred's - World's Best Burgers" shirt yesterday, and had someone ask again if it was true.  I told her that they are very good and worth the trip to Burlington.

Last night I had THE FAMOUS HOGG BURGER at Stolley's.  Another very good burger (despite the preformed patty).  Stolley's is a very convenient stop off of I-94.  Outstanding fishfry, but someone needs to show them how to make a proper fried pork tenderloin sandwich.
