Get 'em while you can:
A frank farewell after 1 million hot dogs
Golden Gate Park shutdowns, detours lost him customers
- Patricia Yollin, Chronicle Staff Writer
Friday, October 29, 2004

It will be a weekend of gratitude, goodbyes and free meat by- products.

A hot dog stand that has flourished in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park for almost a quarter of a century is closing -- defeated by museum shutdowns, detours and construction -- and co-owner Cary Fong is giving away 1,500 wieners to thank his city and his customers.

"I can't survive the winter," said Fong, sounding like a migrating mallard.

His stand is across from the Japanese Tea Garden and behind the band shell. Backhoes, mounds of dirt, cranes and stacks of lumber dominate the landscape -- the Asian Art Museum has moved, and the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum and California Academy of Sciences are being rebuilt.

"It's a disaster area," Fong said. "Nobody can get to me. It's a big obstacle course."

Hi there... well... no free hot dogs.... but.. right now, in Manhattan at the Jack's dollar stores (yes, they are realiable and great) you can purchase a package of Hebrew National Hot Dogs.. and not outdated for the paltry sum of .99... yes! and in the supermarkets here, the price is normally over $4.00... so get em while you can. Jack's on 40th street between Madison and 5th, or maybe the one near Penn Station has them also. While you are there- also for .99 is a pack of knishes- either baked or the square ones.

We will be serving free hot dogs tomorrow night at our Fall Festival.
We are having one Festival for children and one for Senior Adults.
We are servng hot dogs, chips and drinks and dessert to the children and hot dogs, baked beans, chips ,desserts and drinks to the Seniors.
We will have all kinds of games with prizes and candy. This is a community thing that our church does every year . Free Popcorn, etc.
This is a fun event and it keeps the children off the streets and gives the Seniors somewhere to go .
