Gravy fries are popular in South Mississippi. There was a restaurant that served Drydock Fries--fries, roast beef and gravy, and cheese sauce--yummy! Unfortunately, it is closed. However, gravy fries are found in many of our local restaurants.

I love wet fries as well and find them often on the menus of Roadfood type places. Try adding some crumbled Gurkee's (sp) fried onion rings or some well done bacon bits on top of the gravy. Even better!

Fries and gravy. Ahh, yes, I remember now. When I was younger, growing up in the NYC area, the deli's served gravy with fries when you ordered "open" roast beef, turkey, or brisket sandwiches. The sandwiches were served open faced with french fries and gravy over all of it.

I am from Newfoundland, on Canada's east coast. French fries with ground beef and gravy(brown)is a favourite. There are some who prefer dressing(bread stuffing like for poultry) instead of the ground beef. I like both but usually go for the ground beef.

Fries and gravy are a big deal up here in Canada. That also includes poutine (fries, gravy and cheese) as well as fries, gravy and meat. Even the fast food joints up here (McDonalds, BK, KFC) do fries and gravy. Heck, Frito Lay even makes a Fries and Gravy potato chip. I prefer KFC's poutine over McD and BK. It has to be tried at least once in your lifetime.

I get strange looks when I order gravy on my fries in the dallas area but so what . that's the way I like them. It's hard to find a good brown gravy though, most taste like they come straight from a can. The best brown gravy down here that I have found is at the chain "Texas Roadhouse". It's also hard to find a good Hot beef sandwich here.

I have enjoyed poutine in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI. I had never had it before but it is a common side there.

The Cherokee (great burgers, plate lunches etc in Jackson, MS) has fries with gravy and cheese. Really messy, but very good.

Big in Jersey diners, as well. Guess I am too southern. I want my gravy on mashed potatos. Fries are for ketchup, ranch dressing, wing sauce, vinegar, cheese and bacon, wing and ranch mixed, garlic sauce, thai peanut sauce, dutch mayo, or bbq sauce. But that's it!!

I always associated French fries with gravy as Canadian. I didn't realize it was popular in the United States in certain locations.

I can't say that I have heard of fries with chili. Where do they eat them that way?

Sounds like it could be interesting.

Most places with chili also have chili fries. I hate a soggy fry.

I prefer my FFries "extra Crispy" (full-sized fries, not the shoestring type. Salt'em up and give me a cup of Brown gravy to dip them in and I will be busy and happy for awhile. I like my Chicken/Country Fried Steak the same way...dry on the plate with a cup of gravy to dip the pieces in .

I ate at Nick's in south Philly yesterday. The fries w/gravy were the best that I have had. Here is a picture.

There is more about Nick's in this forum thread. The roast beef sandwich served with gravy fries is a must eat.

Hi everyone,
I can't say enough about fries with brown gravy which are a Jersey diner staple. Although no one's mentioned fries with melted mozzarella and brown gravy which I'd always thought were disco fries. That by the way is an awful name and we always refer to them as fries with cheese and gravy, and we always get them with mozzarella without even asking. Although one time at a little deli and grill in NJ I had fries with yellow cheese sauce and brown gravy and they were good too.

Just a little side note to my ramble. The first time I heard about them, I thought the combination sounded disgusting, but I ordered them and they are delicious.

wow, I was picturing more of a thick brown gravy...this looks more
like a thin gravy with hunks of beef...both sound good, but which
one is the one most are talking about on this thread?

thanks

Check out the review under Restaurants of Murphy's in Bartlesville,OK.
We would go there after church when I was a kid. This was 40 years ago! I still rhapsodize about the place.

One can not visit Burlington, VT without having fries and gravy at Nector's. ( Home of the band Phish) Unbelievably good ! I like to add some fresh carved turkey breast. I think I may go there for dinner tonight !

Captain Morgan -

I think gravy is in the eye of the beholder. At Nick's in Philadelphia it is more like a thick au jus, other places it is like a traditional gravy. I use the rule that if the restaurant calls it gravy, then it is gravy.

Boy, talkin' about bringing back memories! When I was in high school in the sixties, we ate lunch at a little restaurant called The Clay Restaurant.(we just called it Clay's). A big plate of steak fries smothered in brown gravy, chased with an RC Cola in a bottle was standard fare four-five days a week. Clay's was on Main Street across from the old Henry Clay High School in Lexington, KY.

I learned about french fries and gravy in "Boomtown" right off Ft. Meade, MD, back in 1961. Still love them to this day.
