Friday Special Sandwich, Millburn Deli in NJ

Anyone have a similar sandwich?  Best known for perfecting the north Jersey sloppy joe sandwich, as long as I can remember they've sold a Friday Special.  As a German not Jewish based deli, they catered to Catholics needing a meatless sandwich on Fridays.  The construction is so-a cut to order thin slice of Pechters rye, their home made tuna salad, a slice of lettuce, a schmear of their famous Russian dressing.  Another slice of rye, their home made egg salad, another slice of lettuce, more Russian, and topped with another slice of rye.  Cut into thirds, with the center piece sliced to have a point shape.
 
Still a classic!

And I was told to watch the On Demand series four finale of Millionaire Matchmaker-the host Patti Stanger was raised in Short Hills, and they show her going to the Millburn Deli, where she wants to pick up-a Friday Special!

I'm not big on Tuna salad or egg salad, but I Love the Milburn Deli Sloppy Joe!

The usual way.

I don't typically like russian dressing but this sound really good and very easy to duplicate at home.

What a great idea for a sandwich....and,I agree, so easy to do at home.....New Jersey strikes again!!!!

The picture of the sandwich in the link is poorly cut; the 'point' of the middle piece should come to the outside of the bread, giving two perfect D's.  The Millburn Deli also sells Sloppy Joe Seniors, which are long rectangles that are cut into 8 or 16 smaller rectangles, which they'll put on a platter or wrapped in a rectangular cardboard box.

Reading about the Millburn deli brought back great memories.  While living / working in the area in the early 70's, I had plenty of their sloppy Joes for lunch, but much preferred their roast beef joe.   Another favorite at the time (long gone) was the steak sandwich on a hard roll at Stanley's.  

That Friday special sounds good! Never thought about putting Russian dressing on a tuna or egg salad sandwich. Only problem is we can't get good deli rye bread here in the South. Guess I could buy some "mediocre" rye bread or use my good homemade wheat bread?

you use the center of the bottom "line" of a slice of rye bread, as the "point" on the bottom of a "V"- slice there--two cuts--three sandwich sections--i suggest putting wooden "Picks" in the sandwich first to keep it stable

I'll bet the 1st 3-cut sandwich was done by a line cook who was on LSD!

Thinly sliced rye is critical, it's too bready with store sliced rye.  And Stanley's is now a CVS drugstore, sadly.
