Fried Chicken find in Madison, WI

Just had lunch here today..."Melly Mell's"...located in the basement of an ugly building along a busy highway. Hard to find, but worth the search. I had a four piece dinner (dark), with rice/gravy and some fantastic cooked cabbage. The greens weren't quite ready, dang it. Had to wait for an eternity (bring a book), but it's cooked to order, and fresh and fragrant. Check out the link and the pics. Now closed Monday except for catering.

Never heard of this place before - how'd you come across it?  Based on the Yelp review it's been in business for at least a year.

Google says it's in the building next to Pitcher's Pub and I haven't been there in ages.  Once I was in there with some friends from work and a snappily-dressed gentleman asked if we'd like the company of any of his female companions...

Actually, I was in Pitcher's Pub one day and I think I met that same gentleman. I just told him I was looking for some good fried chicken instead. Seriously, just word of mouth. Took me forever to find it. Turn left by the pawn shop sign off of the south frontage road parallel to the Beltline. Just a note...you get real plates if you dine inside. Give it shot...glad you rose to the bait, SC!

Speaking of bait, it looks like catfish is also on the menu.  Urbanspoon has a number of favorable reviews as well, so I guess I'll have to check it out some Saturday.

ScreamingChicken - How was Pitcher's Pub? How many Swampwaters did you drink?

My friends and I would go there in high school because they didn't check ID's. We'd get totally wasted before driving home. That was almost 40 years ago.

Does Pitcher's Pub actually serve food? Is it Roadfood worthy? After this many years in business, they must have something going for them.

Nothing special as I recall.  All we ever ordered was typical fried bar food and I'm guessing it all came out of bags.  From what I remember of the area, other than Badger Bowl it's the only tavern around, so it has somewhat of a captive audience.

Absolutely.  We had lunch there today and the chicken was outstanding; if I added it to my Chicken of the Month thread it'd be dead even with Dell Rhea's for the best I've had.  I had the 3-piece dark meal and some very good mac & cheese and black-eyed peas for my sides; Mrs. Chicken wasn't that hungry so she had a hot dog and homemade fries instead.  The hot dog was split and then cooked on the flattop but it finished earlier than the chicken and had cooled off somewhat by the time my lunch was ready - the only thing that wasn't quite right.

There's definitely a family vibe to Melly Mel's, from the decor to the people working there.  The owner is very nice and she took time out from her busy weekend to chat with us a little bit.  She already had 2 catering jobs scheduled for today and picked up a 3rd, and she's feeding 420 people tomorrow with a dropoff job on Monday.

The Yelp and Urbanspoon reviews are right on - this is some excellent fried chicken.

Great to hear! I was hoping you'd like it. She's a sweet lady...I met her the day I was there as well. Still fretting that the greens weren't ready...oh well, might have to check back on Tuesday.

CK, I know you'd like it.  It doesn't have the peppery taste of Indiana chicken but is well-seasoned nonetheless.

I'll look forward to trying next time I'm in Madison. Thanks.

Earlier this year my son and I had some of the best pizza ever in Madison. It's at Pizza Brutta. Wonderful place!
