So I still don't get why Fried Clams was moved to here. Isn't all food, unless raw or salads, cooked in some way, hence all food could be put under here? We're talking about fried clams, how good they are, and esp. places to get them, not so much how to cook them. Can we get this back under Seafood please? I had a hard time figuring out where this went, and others will too.

Whole belly fried clams 2012/03/14 18:07:12 (permalink)
I am so disappointed that this thread that was so popular and many pages long was put into the Cooking Techniques thread because we were talking about fried clams.
We weren't just talking about how to fry the clams, we were talking about where to get them and how good they are! Then why isn't every food in Cooking Techniques since all food is cooked in a certain way unless it's raw? So maybe we can try again to talk about whole belly fried clams. On the suggestion of another poster, we went to Hayes Seafood House in Clarence NY last summer.  They special ordered the clams for us and dare I say they fried them up! They were so delicious, can't wait to go this coming summer again. I miss this forum in Seafood.

I'm so glad to hear the one in Clarence is still open. Maybe keeping two going was just too much. I know the owner said he'd like to retire sometime and he has all daughters none whom are interested in the business. He and his wife were so nice to us. They said they didn't think anyone ever drove 4 hours to eat there before! And we'll do it again this summer. What a treat to get the whole belly clams. Thank you so much for recommending Hayes. Oh, and I'm glad to see they moved the whole thread back here where it should be under Seafood! Thanks Roadfood Forum Moderators!

Now living in Florida, I am still a whole clam (belly) nut. About the only thing I miss not living in Mass. is the seafood, especially fried clams.  Tony's Clams and the Clam Box on Wollaston Beach, Lindley's in Wareham amoung the best.  However, there are some good clams in southeastern Florida.  Kelly's Landing (south) in Ft Lauderdale, the same family that ran Kelly's Landing in South Boston and still run Kelly's landing in Weymouth, MA., well worth seeking out.  The creme de la creme however is Lola's Seafood Eatery in Stuart, FL.  on Federal Hwy near the Roosevelt Bridge. New England owners and fresh seafood flown in from New Bedford daily.  Just about the best FRIED CLAMS I have had (here or in Mass.)  Very clean and not too fancy or expensive.

Best damn fried clams I ever had was in Englewood Florida, of all places.  Of course the woman who ran the place came from Hull, Mass.  Alas, she up and sold the place.  Not sure it's Kelly's I'm thinking of in Ft. Laudrdale, but there was a place in the shopping center where all the boating stuff is(17th st?)..the Quarterdeck Rest (another good place) was nearby.  Great Clams and a an all around good menu

Gee, Florida is surrounded by sea, there's lots of good seafood options. I lived in Tampa and got fresh shrimp right at the docks, as well as FL lobster, rock shrimp, grouper, trout, sea bass, etc.

Now that "the Season" is starting again, I'll put in a plug for The Clam Shack at the mouth of Falmouth Harbor (west side) Falmouth, Massachusetts.  Great Clams, wonderful view of the boats coming in and out, and a fish market attached to get stuff for later

I haven't been there yet but my sister in Florida says Betty's on A1A in Ormond Beach has great whole belly fried clams. The owner is from Mass. and has them flown in.

Just talked to my brother who lives there too and he thinks the Fisherman's Net up in Flagler Beach across from the pier is even better. It's a nice drive along A!A. Have him try both and write what he likes!

With that statement I love clams and also those other things they call clams.

So...  if Howard Johnson's clams were so loved by so many why don't the many fast food places or any of the many fast food places about add fried clams to their menus?

I'd get in line!

So would I! I miss both the fried clam strips at Howard Johnson's, and the Howard Johnson's Restaurants themselves. Another sad disappearance from the dining landscape of North America.

I first had fried clams at Howard Johnson's. But as I have learned, they are nothing compared to whole-bellied fried clams.

I like Fried clams piled high. The clams are dipped in evaporated milk, and coated with a combination of regular, corn, and/or pastry flour.
Thanks

So how do the fried clams at Bob's Clam Hut in Kittery stack up to those of the other places mentioned these days?

Bobs are good.there are some others that are Great.and way too many that are worse.  They slightly edge out Captain Simeon's over on the back road for taste...but the latter offers such a great view and wider menu choices (and Booze!) along with restaurant style dining that we often go there instead ( we had a house in York ME).   We also avoid the "outlet crowd" and traffic.  If you're coming to shop, you can't beat Bobs in the that area.

As I understand it, Capt. Simeon's is now under new management as Captain and Patty's Restaurant.

The Clam Box in Ipswich just opened this past weekend - they have the best fried clams anywhere in my opinion.

Would you say that the Clam Box is still the best?

And do most of these New England places offer fried clam strips as well as fried whole belly clams?

There Are places in NE that offer clam strips...............but.......IMHO..........steer clear of them.  A Clam strip is a different element all together..from a different type of clam.  Most of what you will get is frozen strips and not much flavor......but if that is what you like...............You''ll get the same thing in Toronto, Iowa, Texas, or Costa Rica as you would in New England

The whole bellies were excellent.

Any particular 'dinning section', Eric?  You don't give us much to trace in your reference.

I don't know Eric but this article about fried clams was in the New York Times in 2007...

I'd fire that paperboy if it just came today...

ericparkr Fried clams are to New England what barbecue is to the South. Like barbecue, the best clams come from small roadside shacks run in pragmatic mom-and-pop style.
David Leite writes about how he drove 625 miles chasing after his childhood memories of the best fried clams in a story in today's dinning section.
