Fried Jalapenos with sausage filling?

Years ago, before they became really popular and became known as poppers, I had some fried jalapenos in Texas, just north of Dallas. They were stuffed with crumbled, spicy sausage instead of cheese. And instead of being coated with a thin breadcrumb coating, were coated with a thick, bread-like coating. The coating was about 1/4 to 1/3 inch thick all around, and soft. They were great.

I haven't seen them anywhere since (maybe because I live in CT).

Has anyone else had these? Does anyone know where these can be found, hopefully in the Northeast?

My aunt stuffs cherry peppers with an itaian hot sausage mixture then bakes or fries in a little oil. I've done the same with jalapeno's and other large spicey peppers like hungarian hot banana. I guess you could go the next step and bread and deep fry...

Agreed. They & similar are far too easy to make @ home. Why worry about "where to get them", etc. ?

In the world of bbq (low & slow), there is a version of these called ABTs (Atomic Buffalo Turds). Here's a link to a recipe and step by step photos. pb

ABT's rock and are addictive. I slice the pepper in half and scrape out the seed and membrane...this removes most of the heat and lets non pepper heads enjoy the flavor of the meat of the pepper for the first time, if you can convince them to eat one. Stuf with cream cheese and pulled pork, sprinkled with rub, then wrapped in bacon.
Fabulous....my friends have offered me money to make them. I believe I could get some of my co workers to go topless with these things, lol.

We enjoy a cold version of the small stuffed peppers using tuna salad as the filling the way Bill Voss noted the crab stuffing. It lets the 'flavor' of the pepper (not the heat) come thru and the tuna offsets it rather well. Easy to make a plate of appetizers for the beer-bunch.

I should have mentioned that in many recipes for ABT's smoked pulled pork is used instead of the "Little Smokies" which, I believe, tastes better and lessens the chances of "turd ejection". Also, some cooks add 1/4-1/2 cup of honey to the cream cheese and mix/squeeze it around in a zip-lock bag. It can then be "piped" onto the jalapeno halves by cutting a corner off the bag. pb

Last post before off to metro. ABT's turned out excellent (cooked basic recipe). Cream cheese filling was a bit bland, though, & overall product wasn't hot enough for me. Was going to bump it up with some fresh habeneros, but local purveyor's offerings were below par.

Adju, I sprinkle my rub on the cream cheese...don't be afraid to add sauce to the mixture before stuffing the peppers. If you like it hot, don't remove the seeds and membranes. You can also added chopped habs, or even stuff the habs and wrap with bacon.

I think I will add powdered cayenne pepper to my rub next time (I did sprinkle the rub on the cream cheese). Blast dang it; I'm supposed to be getting ready to go to Atlanta...

I made some yesterday for Our Big Panther win and they were a hit!I cooked them on the grill and I think they turned out better by cooking in the oven.I also mixed some cheddar cheese with the cream cheese and sprinkled with Mr.Stubbs Rub.

Perhaps I'm reading wrong but it seems like most of the recipes are filling halfed peppers, a friends wife makes them that way. I remove the stem end and fill the whole cavity with sausage/chedder-jack cheese mix or seafood mix ez on the creamcheese, nor do I bread them before frying or grilling..

The peppers are halved to make it easier to take out the seeds and the "white stuff". You put the filling into both halves, add the sausage or pulled pork, press the two halves together, and wrap with the bacon. If you don't care that much about cleaning out the inside of the pepper, it is easier to do it your way. pb

Grease not necessarily bad. I am reserving my late 02/06 metro 'Lanta trip for a grease fest here:

    http://www.savagepizza.com/menu.htm#Crusts

My prior visit to that area as well as two more before the end of this month was/will be in Stn. Mtn. area.
