Have any of you ever purchased fried pies at a bakery, restaurant or stand? I haven't traveled much in the parts of the country where fried pies are common and was wondering if they are something most people just make at home or occasionally buy all ready prepared. I made a lot of fried pies yesterday for a party that featured food from the Carolinas. They turned out really well (my mom's recipe) and someone mentioned there should be a fried pie stand here in the midwest. I've never seen them outside of someone's home. I did a search here, but didn't come up with anything.

We enjoyed great Apple (Fried) Pies at an Apple Orchard restaurant and Bakery in Eastern Tennessee. In Fact the Sundancer is there while I post this. He told me yesterday he was going to get some apples and fried pies for his family this weekend. I have forgotten the name but I'll get him to post about them. There are many references to the Family Pie Shop in DuValles Bluff, Arkansas. Across the street from Craigs BBQ it is a beat-up old house and garage where the lady makes all types of pies, large and small, baked and fried. We have enjoyed them several times as we pass thru eastern Arkansas!

Thank you, Mayor! I think my search was too broad. I found the Family Pie Shop right away with your help. The photo of the fried pie in the review is great.

I have eaten fried pies that someone else brought back from Denton, Texas. Naturally, I went on a search for these beauties on my next trip through town and found out that the place had subsequently closed. I believe that the name of the place may have been the Southern Fried Pie Company - but, my memory ain't what it used to be.

Perhaps you would consider this delightful place in the mountains of East, TN. a Great location in Cosby TN which is located very close to Gatlinburgh. I have had lunch there several times and once with the Mayor. Very good food and great apples and fried pies. http://dininginthesmokies.com/_cosby/dccarver.htm Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

I have always considered the Hostess Fruit Pies that we buy everywhere in stores were a mass-produced version of the fried Pie. I did that til I had some of the real thing from Arkansas and Tennessee. Now I know the BIG difference! The real Fried Pie has fresh, or close to it, fruit...real fruit in it, and a crusty/flakey crust with a minimum of "goop".

Now it gets pretty interesting. My mother told me that her mother only used fresh apples in fried pies, as far as fresh fruit. Other than that, she used dried fruit, such as apricots and peaches that were dried for keeping. They never used berries in fried pies, they reserved those for baked pies and cobblers. This was in Kentucky. An African American friend I talked to today told me her grandmother never used anything other than apples when fresh for fried pies. She sold them from a cart at a steel mill in Birmingham, Alabama. When apples weren't fresh, she used dried fruit. What kinds of fruit has been in the pies you've had in Texas, etc. Has it been apples, peaches, apricots, berries? I grew up with only apples and a dried apricot filling, but that was at home.

I have had fresh apple and dried apple, fresh peach, dried apricot, and pecan pie filling. I have seen but not tried some made with raspberry and blackberry preserves, some with a chocolate pudding filling.

The Texas ones that I can lay claim to seemed to include a number of fresh fruit options. Coming to mind, right now, are apple and peach - but, I am sure that there were others, too. I also remember a chocolate fried pie, for some reason.

TTM... you may be referring to "Original Fried Pies" out of Davis Oklahoma just north of Denton in the Arbuckle Mts. Satellite stores have come and gone in various locations in Oklahoma. There was one in Broken Arrow for about a year but it's gone now. There is at least one in OKC.

If ya'll are ever in the Ozarks, you might like the fried pies I make! I have a little pink and white trailer that I park between Gassville and Mt. Home along Arkansas Hwy 62/412. I handmake everything and fry them after you order them, so they're hot and fresh! If you ever want details, email me at .

Great fried apple pies in the Ellijay and Dawsonville Ga apple houses in the fall. The Varsity has a great fried peach pie in Atlanta.
