Fried chicken in St. Louis

I'm going to St. Louis Sunday-Tuesday, and am looking for fried chicken. Hodak's is recommended on this site. I've read some of the old threads, and I know what people have said about Porter's. Because of a family member who has mobility issues, I don't think Porter's will work for us. Are there better options? Has anyone been to the Tip Top (Serbian fried chicken) in Soulard?

I'm no expert on chicken or St. Louis, but I liked the fried chicken at Hodak's. And I liked the chicken and waffles at Goody Goody. I don't understand the chicken and waffles concept, it was just a piece of chicken on one plate and a waffle on another, both good.

Porter's fried chicken at Exit 283 off I 44 in W St. Louis is the best IMO. Porter's Fried Chicken @ 3628 South Big Bend Boulevard, St Louis, MO 314 - 781 - 2097. http://www.porterschicken.com/

Thanks, plb, for the comment re: Hodak's and Goody Goody. Littleman: I appreciate the recommendation on Porter's, but based on the reviews and photos I've seen, it looks like it is essentially a counter-service place. As I mentioned initially, one of the people in our party is mobility-impaired, and I don't think that will work for us.

I think the best fried chicken in St. Louis is King Edwards in Crestwood (SW suburb). http://www.kingedwardschicken.com/ I have been to Tip Top many times and it is my second choice. Since Tip Top is mainly a bar and allows smoking, I recommend only going during nice weather when you can sit on the patio. The other dishes such as Serbian sausages and beef kabobs are also excellent. http://www.tiptopinsoulard.com/ Amigo Joe's Mexican Restaurant on The Hill has recently opened a chicken place next door. The chicken is very good and it is a good bargain. They use whole breast pieces in the white meat dinners (as opposed to half breasts or thighs). Another good choice would be Farmhaus on Monday. They have a blue plate fried chicken special with two sides, salad, and iced tea for $10. http://www.farmhausrestaurant.com/ It is not really fried chicken, but you might want to try The Shaved Duck and get the chicken wing appetizer. The wings are first smoked and then fried and served with a mango-habanero bbq sauce. The ribs, pulled pork, and brisket are awesome. http://www.theshavedduck.com/ You can get excellent fried wings at Yummies, a soul food place near The Shaved Duck. Plus some killer collard greens and banana pudding. http://www.yummiessoulfood.com/index2.html

Thanks for all these recommendations. I'm not sure which I'll be able to try, but I will report back upon my return.

Wow, are the prices on King Edwards menu still current? A Breast for $1.69? Around here they go for $3.50+ tis why I've had to nearly give up chicken. KFC is $4 a breast and are TINY. (not that I like KFC, but I had a craving one day and it was $13 for one person lunch 2 breasts, large potatoes, drink)

Your stops in Illinois reminded me of Ravanelli's Restaurant in Collinsville and Granite City. Fried chicken lunch buffet... what more can you say?
