GFS battered cod filets

Has anyone used this product? I'm booked to do a fish fry (new for me) and am looking for a good battered fish fillet to serve. Also don't won't the area to smell like high heaven. Thanks.

    If I were you I'd do a little batter action of your own.  It's not hard and I think your efforts will be much better than a pre-made product.  Even taking some catfish, marinate it in yellow mustard and cajun seasoning then coat with cornmeal/fish fry and cook that up.  How we did it back home in LA and it taste great.  So simple and people love it.  Plus very economical and if you get good farmed catfish you won't have to worry about it tasting muddy or anything.  Even doing a nice beer batter/tempura and using any type of whitefish will have great results.  Plus you'll be unique and be able to add your own twist to it.  Cheers!

    32oz beer, 2 eggs, 2 tsp baking powder, 11/2 lb corn starch, salt, pepper, onion powder, gran garlic to taste, 1 cup + /- flour, mix to the concistancy of pancake batter. Fry 375
    If I was being paid to do a fish fry, I would not give the client frozen "fish sticks"
    And as the client, if you showed up with this, I would not pay you for it. Frying fresh fish is not difficult.

    The key to catering a fish fry is having the right equipment if there's lotsa people.

    Yep. Fresh perch and walleye are expensive here. That's why I'm looking into the GFS product. The event is a lower paying event for college students. The town is "dry" so beer is out.

    I dont know where all the stigma comes from for using a frozen product. The secret is in how you dress it and present it.

    There's nothing wrong with using a frozen product.  But with a little love, some know how and a great starting ingredient one can easily do way better than prebattered fish from GFS

    Ran a fish place for several years back in the '70's...using fresh product is not difficult & the end product is far better than any pre-breaded item. I personally would avoid a batter and just use a dry cornmeal based breading. Plenty of good ones out there.
     
    You don't say how many you are feeding, but correct equipment with enough capacity is critical. Be especially wary if you are also doing french fries & hushpuppies. The frozen fries will kill your oil temps if you are not careful....fryer is not large enough etc. If you are only feeding 50 or so you can probably get by with a few turkey fryers. More than that & you will probably need a commercial gas fired fryer that holds a jug of oil...or more. IMHO

    Domino's Pizza got their start selling to college students in dorms so frozen fish sticks for them is a real step up.

    To each their own. I wouldn't do it.
     
    As a chef I am terribly OCD about only using fresh product as I always want my business to be seen as one that goes the distant to provide the highest quality food.
     
    Bunch of college kids may not seem like the best bunch to review your food, never know when there will be one foodie in the bunch that calls you out though.
