The Travelin Man

Mr. Mayor, speaking of Amtrak, I have informed them that I will require all regionally appropriate meals in the dining car on the California Zephyr.  Since dinner the first night will be during a segment through the rolling cornfields of Iowa, I have requested a thick Iowa pork chop with all the fixings.  Breakfast should be about the time we roll into Denver, so they should be able to offer a Rocky Mountain Oyster omelet - unless, of course, I can convince Biker Jim to meet me at the train station with one of his rattlesnake dogs!  Lunch should be somewhere near Aspen, where hopefully they will have a bison burger on the menu.  Dinner will be somewhere in Utah.  I don't know what we'll have for dinner, but I fear we'll be drinking the yellow snow by that point.  A Basque breakfast will no doubt be provided in Reno the following morning.  Lunch will be served as we start rolling through north central California.  By that point, we will be served whatever is left for lunch, but I assume that they will have pot brownies for dessert.

Should be an awesome ride!

Perhaps a mess of Trout.

BTW- I await my Dixie Crossroads T-Shirt- X-tra large please

TTM:  I have always wanted to make that trip in a train.  I had a buddy that did the Vancouver thing to eastern Canada.  He enjoyed it but indicated that it got boring at times.  A lot of neat scenery is at night.  Sounds like you got your meals pretty well planned out and now it they will only comply.

As well as I know TTM, even though Amtrak is taking him through  the Mountain states, he would  really prefer that  they serve Pizza from Grimaldi's, Fried Chicken from Stroud's and BBQ from Louie Mueller's on the train

That surprises me. I have taken Amtrak west out of Chicago several times and the trips are usually planned that you leave Chicago late afternoon to arrive in the mountains by dawn. I would thing TransCanada would be even more savvy about that and plan the long boring plains during the night.

The Cal Zephyr IS scheduled to put travel thru the two Mountain Ranges during daylight hours. They have done this for over 50 years...and makes for a wonderful scenic ride no matter what time of year you travel.   Westbound the Rockies are a full day's ride after leaving Chicago the previous evening...Then the second night includes the wild nightlife of Salt Lake City and the ride across Nevada 's desert. Next day it is the High Sierra's. The train used to follow the Feather River Canyon route of the Western Pacific RR, but in the Amtrak consolidation it moved to the Overland route of the Union (Southern) Pacific !  Thats the famous Donner Pass route.
The Donner Pass Route was famous for it's "dieter's delight" menu carried over from the pre-railroad era. That's why I gave TTM the advice to pack some MRE's, just in case he is stranded on a snowy day with some extremely thin, hungry-looking locals while traversing the Pass.

Wow.  I totally forgot about that.  I think I bought it already and it is around the house somewhere.  I will dig it out and bring with me to Nashville (since I don't think I am going to see you before then).

Grimaldi's, Stroud's and Louie Mueller's will all look like a welcome respite once I am sitting in the dining car - hoping for something edible.  All of the train travel forums seem to have people speaking highly of the food, but they are train people, not necessarily food people.  I am not expecting the steak to be of the same caliber as Peter Luger's, but I don't think I will starve, either.

I am taking the Capitol Limited (Washington-Chicago), California Zephyr (Chicago-Emeryville, CA), and Coast Starlight (LA-Seattle) for their entire lengths.  My understanding is that both the Zephyr and the Coast Starlight have some of the most amazing scenery in the Amtrak system and most of the highlights are during the daytime.  I will have my camera at the ready.

CK - I look forward to seeing you, as well, my friend!

As we plan and prepare for this coming Glee Club session, I would ask that everyone take a moment to remember our fellow Road Food and Glee Club member, Rick Flinn, who passed away earlier today. Rick attended several of our gatherings and, with his wife Jan, contributed wit and wisdom from his many years of service to his church and his community.  We will offer a celebratory toast to our friend at the Saturday evening Session of the Glee Club Meeting.

I have known Rick for a long time, traveled with him a few times and always enjoyed his company.  He was a class act, a great theologian, enjoyed his libation and food and a lot of fun to be with.

Roadfood will miss him and so will I.

Sincerely and Respectfully

I'll try to come up with a more formal list, but at the moment, I think the cities best chicken is coming out of 400 degrees, and I have long thought that the best fish is to be found at East Side. We can get a good pimiento cheese at either Merridee's or possibly Henpeck, and I have a secret burger and hot dog joint, ttat I'm not yet willing to divulge.  I'also have a legal moonshiner in mind, a German pastry shop, A Mexican popcicle store that I know Meriton just LOVES, and an Asian noodle shop that doesn't belong anywhere within 1000 miles of Nashville.  I'm open for suggestions.

Couple of notes/questions:

The new Murfreesboro Road location of Bolton's might be a possibility for Hot Chicken, as I believe they have room for a larger group (they are in a former O'Charley's building)...

I NEED to know what noodle shop you're talking about, if it isn't King Market (purely in the name of research you understand)...

Guessing Gabby's on the burger/dawg front...

My noodle shop is PS Noodle Pot, on Bell Rd., west of Olive Garden. I don't know the name of the burger place, but it'sin a mobile home across from Harris & Teeter on 21st and I-440.
Gabby's is also a possibility.

Yep, I know PS Noodle Pot, good place although I haven't been in a while.  That burger place is Brown's Diner, which has been around forever and would definitely work!

Re:GLEE CLUB MEET & EAT, FEB. 18&19. NASHVILLE 2012/01/18 13:30:39 (permalink)
BB and all,
I wish we had the time to make this a 'Long Weekend' but for several of the group that just isn't possible. We hope those who can come into Nashville early or stay beyond Sunday morning will communicate with others who have the same plan and visit as many of the places mentioned to report to the group when we are all together.

The Saturday evening session at the Loveless Cafe is taking shape nicely. Rather than have a crowd of 25 plus hungry folks hit the menu-ordering at one time, we want to take advantage of the "Family-Style Supper" the place offers. This will be a 'Family Style AYCE' arrangement, NOT a buffet. They offer Fried Chicken AND Country Ham AND Fried Catfish, with 3 side dishes, Biscuits, brown gravy, and either coffee, tea, or a soft drink. The side dishes will be Mac & Cheese, Hashbrown Cassarole, and Southern Greens with Pot Liquor.  The charge for this feast is $20 per person. Loveless will add an 18% gratuity to that price for a total charge per person of $24 (round number). They request a "one-check" billing so it is imperative that we all have CASH for our individual portion. It will not be possible to break out individual parts for credit card use at the restaurant.

For BB and other dessert-lovers,  arrangements can be made for a supplemental dessert order (individual) not part of the group dinner menu.

The Sunday morning Brunch at ELLENDALE'S is an individual bill arrangement. It is a very nice brunch-buffet and runs about $15 per person. Credit cards are accepted in that situation.

The only place an accurate number of attendee's is necessary is at the Loveless. We will need your RSVP with the number in your party by SuperBowl Sunday, Please.   More news when it becomes available.

(still not sure about Ellendales- it all depends on what time we meet for brunch)

Iwanago and Sundancer are in for Loveless.  We will also do Ellendales if it is early preferably by 9:00-9:30AM.  We gotta get back to Knoxville.  Iwanago is up to the ears in PHD studies which requires intense reading and writing and I have other selfish needs

We will have cash.
