Incidentally. I will be squeezing in at least two (possibly 3) Pork BBQ Sandwiches when I stop through Memphis twice on this trip (literally I'll be going in and out) I'll be returning to the original Payne's , not that horribly disgusting offshoot on Elvis Presley Blvd. All glowing reviews all over the webs point to the location located in the former gas station on Lamar which I visited back in 2005. I hope to return to Interstate BBQ as well after a 13 year absence and perhaps either A & R or Leonards- I didn't enjoy the nasty Buffet at Leonard's 3 years ago, but I understand ordering off the menu is a completely different experience. I've also discovered that there is one location left of Gridley's. Formerly listed in the Roadfood books, I thought they were gone, apparently not and have received favorable reviews- I look forward to trying their bbq shrimp

I ate at that Gridley's on my last trip into Memphis. Maybe it had partially to do with the lack of atmosphere (it is located in a strip mall), but it wasn't a very good experience. None of the items I tried was as good as I remember. And they didn't even have barbecue spaghetti! The staff was very nice, though. Maybe you will have better luck.

I just want to try Gridley's BBQ Shrimp, If I had enough time I would really like to return to Cozy Corner too, I didn't care much for their pork sandwich but would go back just for their cornish game hen & bbq bologna, or their ribs and rib tips.

On the Memphis visit 3 years ago , we teamed up with Pov Pete for a visit to the Gridley's you are describing. The rather beat up Strip Mall was a negative to start...and frankly the Shrimp weren't all that good either. Not bad, but I wouldn't get off I-40 to stop there again.

Greymo PP, Have you ever been to the Capitol Grille at the Hermitage? My son's friend booked us a room there at a great rate and treating us to dinner there on Friday evening. Should be good, Greymo. The hotel is gorgeous, while the Capital Grille (along with City House) is one of my two favorite higher-end restaurants in town...

Sounds terrific. My son's college friend wants to treat us as a way of"paying me back" for all the times that we took him out when he was a poor, struggling college student. So it will be a very nice part of a great weekend.

Hmmm, I guess I'll have to warn the 'Geezer's' to watch their manners this weekend. Iwannago, LLeechef, Ms Mayor, Greymo, MS Ralph, and Marlton. We've never had such a large "ladies" group. I apologize in advance if I missed someone...or added someone who is not going to attend. Remember 'Old Guys' , Keep one foot on the floor WHILE EATING !

Maybe we need a catagory of "Junior Geezers" or "Geezer Wannabee's" for Wandering Jew and Traveling Man.

I thought about that, Lisa. At first I thought they could split the characters..one be Mathau and the other be Jack Lemon, but neither look anything like Lemon, and BOTH have a shocking resemblance to Walter Mathau.

Greymo I am certain that every man, in attendence, will have the nicest of manners! Whether or NOT we choose to use them... Al - There is a good chance that I will also be bringing my wife along for the Saturday night festivities at the Loveless. Will confirm as soon as her travel schedule settles...

You think he's grumpy now? Just wait until you see him in the Hawaiian shirt that I'm going to FORCE him to wear in Nashville. Now, that's going to be one grumpy curmudgeon!!

Somehow I cannot imagine anyone forcing Mr. Hoffman to do anything. Lleechef, I believe you have been a positive influence.. I have been searching for some of the residual floral shirts that I have worn in the past. If I can find one of them in the closet, I am certain it will be in good shape as they were only worn one time. I am looking forward to Loveless and Ellendales. I think we will have a very nice private area at Loveless. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Lisa, Tell MH he can wear his Bow Tie with his Hawaiian Shirt, if he insists on going "formal". Paul, as always you bring an aire of gentility to our homely little group. Pogo , we look forward to meeting MS Pogophile. Ralph, Also looking forward to seeing you and your bride. since we can't be there early either, we'll do the best we can with the time we have ! I got some bad news from Ann and B0b Peeples. They won't be able to participate this time. We hope to see them later in the Spring.

Personality wise- yes- otherwise, funny you should mention that I was just out at a business luncheon at the Grille on Main http://www.pinellimarrarestaurants.com/grille_on_main.htm ( I had the grilled chicken on whole grain panini and a side salad) and once again I was approached (for probably the 50th time over the past 25 years) and was asked "has anyone told you, that you look like Kevin Nealon from Weeds" the last time it was over labor day weekend at the Kopper Kettle with Cajun King

I do not know Mr. Hoffman but I sorta feel like I do. He is not grumpy but very intellectual and well versed on the subject matter he knows. It will be a pleasure of mine to make his acquaintance and well as Lleechef. I feel his persona is not his real self but one he enjoys being projected. I wish I had the pleasure of knowing Michael, Mayor, Bushie, BB, Cliff, Lisa, TTM, WJ and many more for more years than I have. I have a feeling that if we all had known each other a long time ago, this meeting would be even more special. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN
