Gary's market, Memphis Tn.

Gary's is on Getwell S. of Shelby. It is a Citgo gas station and a smallish grocery market. In back of the market they have a good sized kitchen and serving area. It is take-out only. They do a heck of a business.

The kitchen is staffed by a bunch of black women that know how to cook Southern. For lunch Wednesday they offered 5 or 6 different vegetables and several meats. I saw fried chicken, fried catfish, couple different kind of sausages (hot links and ?) fried baloney, turkey wings, hot wings and I don't know what all.

For vegetables I saw boiled cabbage, boiled/stewed okra, beans, lima beans, corn, mashed potatoes and more.

I had a "plate" of fried baloney, okra and cabbage with a fresh corn bread muffin. The huge plate cost me not quite 4 bucks.

Definetely worth trying if you get down this way.

What the heck brought this up four years later? Unfortunately I haven't been back to Memphis since.

    Mike,
The place sounds good, THE VEGETABLES and CORNBREAD. I just can't wrap that fried Baloney in my arms with any love. I'll order three or four veggies, bread and iced tea! Since I'll be excluding that high dollar entree, the meal might not set me back more than a couple bucks!
