I noticed that Meowart just got back from Italy and she discussed Gelato. I have traveled Italy extensively and and joyed this treat immensely. I wonder if it is available in the south USA? Perhaps some of you know about that. It sure ain't in Knoxville but not a whole lot is except a beautiful place. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Sundancer, I too love gelato and Italy. Only place I've found really authentic gelato State-side is in Boston and NYC. Sorry, neither are next to you. Sorrier yet, neither are next to ME! But I too live in one of the most beautiful places on the planet, so we should feel lucky, afterall, even if we are gelato-deprived!

Bumper, glad to hear that the Fresh Market has Italian Ice. Next time I am in their neighborhood, I will stop and purchase the ice. We race almost every weekend on the NHRA circuit, but I do not get to attend very many due to my professional obligations. I will attend the Las Vegas Race 10/23-26. I assume you are a West Knoxvillian. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

OUR FAMILY IS RETURNING TO ROME ON VACATION THIS WINTER. WE HAD GELATO AT A PLACE NEAR THE PANTHEON, BUT THE NAME ESCAPES ME. THE FLAVORS WERE SO INTENSE THAT I NEEDED TO STOP WALKING AND TOTALLY FOCUS ON THE EXPERIENCE. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY GOOD SUGGESTIONS FOR OUR NEXT VISIT. WE GO IN JANUARY.

I believe you are referring to Giolitti. The photo in my previous post is from there. I also really enjoyed Blue Ice - a chain of gelato stores in Rome.

The spumoni and canoli are available at retail in the freezers of most of the grocery stores in the New Orleans area. Incidentally, hard frozen canoli is a fine treat. They are good thawed, but I have gotten to like them better eaten like an ice cream bar.

Here in Beaumont, we have Rao's Bakery that has Gelato, they are famous for their King Cakes as well. In Houston there is Dolce & Freddo for Gelato.

Incredible pistachio gelato at Food Life in Chicago. I've also had it in Las Vegas (on the way back from OUR honeymoon) at some hotel, but can't remember where---and at the food court of the King of Prussia Mall (northwest of Philadelphia).

How much fat is in gelato by the way? Isn't it made from butterfat/buttermilk?

There's an ice cream place at the Annapolis harbor which claims to serve gelato, but hubby (who has had the real deal) didn't think much of it. We're in Mt. Airy now, and would love to go to Rockville this summer and try. There's a place on Shady Grove Road called That's Amore which claims to have good gelato. (They also have outlets in Columbia and in Vienna and Sterling, VA.) Is that the place? P.S. This is hilarious, but if you do a Google search on "Gelato Rockville MD" you get a link to That's Amore, and to your post on this thread!!

Ah gelato! Brings back memories of a happy summer backpacking around Italy: I had tons of great Italian roadfood but sometimes, when it's really really hot, I'd eat gelato for lunch AND dinner There's nothing like sitting at the edge of a historic fountain or on some stone steps in the Italian summer sunshine, dressed in shortalls and a floppy cotton hat, getting more and more brown with every passing minute and eating voluptuously creamy but light gelato to cool yourself down...

Another poster from Maryville, TN reported that a Knoxville place call the Fresh Market now served Gelato. I have never had it but I want the experience. I will stop and report on it for those who are interested. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

There's a great gelato place--Cafe Gelato--here in Columbia, MO, a half-mile south of Providence and Nifong. They offer about 25 flavors, though I always get Baci--hazelnut and chocolate. Mmmmmm. Not sure how long they're going to last in their outskirts-of-town location, but I'm doing my best to bring in business. :)

"Thats Amore", though a good place is not the place I mean. I think it is called "SAM's" and is in the , well its behind the only Shoneys on Rockville Pike. (I hope its has not closed yet due to bad food). In this shopping center there is also a Spanish resturant, a Pho noodle place, and another middle eastern market. (Sam's also has midddle eastern food, and a resturant.) Matt

Hi y'all. I've got a desperate situation - I'm going to a Homemade Ice Cream Going Away Party this Sunday afternoon and since I'm part Italian I thought it would be kewl - coooooooooool - to make some gelato or a nice cantelope italian ice but I don't have a recipe. This is my first time on your site so I haven't figured out where the recipes are located. Signed: Desperately preparing to freeze in Alabama
