Generators...thought I had mine picked out until today... Tue, 08/2/11 8:19 PM (permalink)
I had planned on using a Generac RV LP 7500 generator for my truck.  Today I spoke with a tech who previously serviced my RV's.  He is telling me they've had bad experiences with the generacs and the RV industry has pretty much standardized on the Onan's.  He also said the LP generators are not efficient and that I should use gas.  I have a hard time believing that from what I've seen and read in the past.

Between my frig/freezer, warming cabinet, and roof air, I'm sitting at 44 amps.  I'm concerned about properly sizing my generator as I don't even have my lights, POS and hood fan included in that.

What are some other generator options that people have used here?  Can I put a "portable" generator into an enclosure or will it overheat?  Can I use a "standby generator"?  I saw one of those on the back of a truck the other day.  It is a 14000 KW LP made by Guardian and looked exactly like this build on a platform on the back of the truck:

    Browe,
Onan's are a great product but everything I have read said LP generators are efficient. So I don't know what to tell you except get on the phone and call Onan and ask them. Then do a big search online looking for people that own one and are sharing there experience. Research, research, and search again and you know as much as anyone on roadfood.
    Good luck

Was he selling Onans?  I have a POS gas Onan sitting, in pieces just like we got it back from the Onan repair shop, in  the bus. The Onan that we bought 3 days before heading out to here NM is now doing what the one that is in pieces was doing. My opinion of Onan is not very high. I won't buy another one. And I won't be installing an Onan in our bus conversion either.

Generacs are as good as an Onan. Onan has deep ties with the RV industry. They throw more $$ at the RV industry than anyone else. Ever go to a FMCA rally? Onan helps foot the bill! DIESEL is more efficient that gas. LP generally uses more fuel per hour of use but the price of LP used to be much lower so the cost to operate used to be much lower. Not any more.

Go to the Escapees Discussion Forum to read up on generators. These are RVers and they are well versed in generators.

the only problem with diesel gen sets is the incredible increase in weight, and without good insulation, noise
but with the new diesel technology even those two concerns are becoming things of the past.... at a price that is!

i forget what the exact formula is, but from my extensive time in the boating forums, i can tell you that unless this is seriously going to be a 10+ year endeavor, dont worry with diesel if your doing it for an economics reason, you will take forever to make back the additional up front costs, and then you have to factor in the added cost of lugging around the extra weight, as well as the enormous added cost of maintenance and repairs...

of course, if your truck, or your tow vehicle are already diesel, and you are seriously in this for the long haul, then diesel would be the way to go.....

I have the genrac 8000e 12000 start up wattage with 8000 contuous. and just did my first oil change. moblie 1 full synthic. I will be trying to fit the exhust that i made from the old generator to this one as the fuel consumtion is a lot more than the old one.
This generator is a 14.5 hp and the old one was 13 hp, the old generator used aprox 6.5 gals for 10hrs run time. The new generator uses 7.75 gals for the same time run. A lot of the differnce I think is that I was able to set the thottle on the old gen and this one is set at a constance setting. And I used a multi tester to set the thottle after I had everything turn on in the van and set the volts at 110-115v. Mike

I think that your going to like the LP as it's going to run a lot cleaner and will be more efficent than gas. Run synthic oil and you should beable to run 150 hr before your oil change. Mike
