I gotta say - I went to OB's just last week and it was not at all good to me. No smoky flavor, drab sauce. I would not go back.

    Olddocdiner,

O.B.'s has switched from the old pits to commercial "barbecue" cookers in order to more easily handle the volume of their business. Folks who really know barbecue can tell the difference. Tourists either can't tell or don't care. Too bad. O.B.'s used to be a great old joint turning out real, wood-cooked barbecue. Vandy's Barbecue in Statesboro is a great example of real GA barbecue.

Real deal Georgia boy here... Have kinda made the Ga. "Q" joints something of a hobby.

Harold's remain my fave, since I was a mere child. It's an institution. Still think there's no better Brunswick stew, and there is no place other than Harold's that I know of, offering cracklin' cornbread along with it. THAT is a dying art!

All that to say this: I finally...FINALLY tried Williamson BBQ in Marietta. A big thumbs up!!! Good stew, good wood smoked pork & chicken---and THE best Q sauce I have had, I do believe. Tomato based, but with something of a kick. For anyone out of state, it can be ordered on their site, and I don't think you will be unhappy picking some up.

The restaurant itself screams BBQ, right down to the sites and smells. I will be back!

Are there any "really good" Q places in the Stone Mtn. area? (To me this means NOT having to get back on the Atlanta interstate road-race...) TIA.

Vandy's is still open? Great - haven't been there for many years. Sorry to hear about OB's. That was a must stop for us coming back to ATL from FL.
As for BBQ in Stone MTN - that's on the other side of the world to me, so I can't help you out.

Oh my, We are traveling to FL next week and that was going to be our dinner stop. It has such good reviews on this site and elsewhere. What was wrong with it? I'm very curious as I may want to change our plans. We've never been there before.

I've found that you need to get there at lunch. At the end of the day they are winding down with their "leftovers" before the new batch comes out of the smoker.

I've been there probably half-a-dozen times over the past decade. We were there a week ago Saturday at about 3 in the afternoon (maybe that had something to do with it). Had the chopped pork sandwich. The meat was pretty tasteless, and the sauce wasn't particularly tasty either. I've had very good experiences with the GA Pig in the past, so maybe this was just a bad day for them. Must say that the Brunswick Stew was pretty bad as well....

Over three years ago, I touted Champ's (now defunct) and KC Pit BBQ - but times change. For the last couple of years, the best bbq in metro Atlanta is at Sam & Dave's BBQ 1 on Lower Roswell Road just east of Johnson Ferry Road and Sam & Dave's BBQ 2 on Whitlock Avenue just west of the Marietta Square.

Sam & Dave's brisket is fantastic. Their pork, ribs, chicken, and sides are all very good - just now quite as good as the brisket. Sometimes I even remember to add sauce.

We stopped at the GA Pig about 5pm on Fri Aug 24th. We got 2 racks of ribs and sides of potato salad, coleslaw and beans to take to our room about 30 miles further down I-95. We both thought the food was excellent and though I prefer dry rub on ribs I found the smoky flavor of the meat and the tangy bbq sauce was very good. We had enough food to take on down to Fl with us and feed some others the next night. I have to say the beans were some of the best I've ever had.

One thing I've found over the years is judging whether BBQ is good or bad is very subjective to the eater so I'll just say I found this BBQ to be quite good.

Our experience with GAPig was that it has the most unpleasant staff (except the friendly hound dog that lives under the porch) we've ever encountered in any joint we've ever visited. And the BBQ is'nt worth a second visit...

                                Cheers, John

Spiced Right has just opened a second location - in Roswell a block north of the Roswell Mill (GA 120) - and we tried it this week. My wife and son each ordered pork sandwiches and I had brisket. All were deemed quite good, as well as the single sweet sauce option which we all enjoyed. Our opinions varied on the sides. The hashbrown casserole and the corn casserole were satisfactory. The cole slaw was very enjoyable. The okra (servings were twice as large as the other sides) was excellent. My wife called it the best okra she has had in years.
