German Food

How about German food? I love a good schnitzel with brown sauce and spaetzle and red cabbage. I also love the dumplings and rouladen. Not to mention the sour kraut! We only have one (as far as I know) German restaurant nearby. It's called "Marikkas". The German food really hits the spot on cold winter days.

    Not a big fan, (but I believe the Seafarers are.)... I do like kraut on my dogs and a nice slice of black forest cake, but beyond that...nahhh.

    I actually like german food but for some reason I don't seek it out. I've been to a few really good german restaurants in Milwaukee and Cincinnati, and we apparently have one here in Knoxville, The Linderhoff, but in 12 years I have not been there.

    The Germans use every part of the pig well. Grilled Kassler chops on kraut with boiled taters are one of my faves. My kids will eat their own weight in spatzle. Rouladen is a dish to be worshipped, the mustard gravy from it is an excuse to use the rye bread as a plate cleaner. The reisling and gewurtztraminer wines will stand up to any spicy abuse you can throw at them.

    Mmmm . . . German food. Severely underrated in my opinion. I agree with Rumbelly about the Germans' way with the pig. Only the Chinese and the southern barbecue cooks are as adept with pork as the Germans are.

    My favorite German place is the Black Forest Inn in Minneapolis. Sometimes late at night I dream about their sauerbraten aspic. I ate at a very good German place in a strip mall on West Maple in Omaha a few years ago, but I can't remember the name. There used to be a place called Old Vienna on S. 13th Street in Omaha that had really good German food too. (Probably Austrian food, but I digress.)

    I could really go for some Jaegerschnitzel, or some weisswurst, or a nice piece of strudel . . .

    There's a Hofbrau haus in Newport, KY, across from Cincy. Only Hofbrau Haus like it outside the onein Munich. I did not eat there, just drank the beer. Seems to me there's a similar place, can't remember the name of it by the Cincinnat airport, also in North Ky, that boasts the largest beer can/bottle collection.

    In a world so full of fine ingredients, wonderful tastes and creative dishes, why bother with "German food?"
    Oh, well yea, I do lke sauerkraut on my hotdogs when I'm in NY.

    I lived in Germany for a couple of years courtesy of Uncle Sam. I liked the food but have yet to find a stateside place that does it like they do it there. Here, it's about the beer.

    I love german food, but being german, it's no surprise. My favorite german restaurant is the Student Prince in Springfield Mass. In fact, this month is game fest. It's a yearly tradition there. I usually go at least once that month for my elk fix. I love the house salad dressing (homemade russian roquefort) The East Side in New Britain CT is another german restaurant I have tried. I did not like it as much as the Student Prince but the goulash was quite good. There is a place in Danbury, too Helga's but now it's called something else. I have yet to try it. My faves are rouladin, paprika chicken, shnitzle, spaetzle, marinated cucumbers, wurst (all of them).

    It's hard to beat dumplings smuthered in butter and onions. Very much a winter time comfort food.

    The tomato, cucumber, and onion marinated salad with dill is a favorite as well. The best hamburger I ever had in my life came from a small stand in Crailsheim, Germany. We were there for a couple of weeks and I had this several times --- I remember how fresh all the veggies on it were.

    Hey Hastyman, my wife's family owned Morris Men's Wear at 59th and Maple. I know the place you mean, and we also dined at the Old Vienna. My father in law preferred it to Bohemian cafe. I like it all.

    a great cuisine! When going to school in NYC,E.86th street,between 2nd and 3rd ave had wonderful German places

    weiner rostbraten(sic)
    etc.......and as mentioned,beer,beer,beer
