Get your Shrimp while You can Sun, 06/6/10 7:43 PM (permalink)

I bought Tiger Shrimp today 13-15 ct - 16.00 per pound.  In the past these would go for maybe 10.00.  Basted with a mix of olive oil, paprika and garlic.  I added grape tomatoes, smoked sausage and onion.  Enjoy shrimp while you can.

It's been missing from my diet for years, and that's because of the pre-oil gusher prices. I can only see a shrimpless future for many more years now that the Gulf is crudely unctuous.

Now farmed shrimp, at least the bigger ones, will be in short supply. I was reading that a bacterial die-off can kill a whole pond full in a day. The problem is world wide. If the shrimp are harvested quickly, they are still good to eat. Maybe that is why smalls and mediums are cheap right now

I've been getting 41-50 ct for $7.99 lbs.  The frozen farmed black tigers.  Can't get gulf fresh up here.  Every now and then one of those "fresh from the gulf coast" trucks pull into town, but thier shrimp seem pretty sketchy at times.

I personally do not care for farmed shrimp.  I don't like the texture.  Recently bought Gulf 16-20s for $10.99/lb.  Of course all Gulf shrimp (unless you're at a dock on the Gulf) are previously frozen but I prefer them to the tigers.

I agree, LLee.  When I lived in Seattle I had some very nice selection.  Up here in God's frozen north though, my seafood options run lean.  Wild game on the other hand...

Shrimp here goes on sale for $1 off almost every week. What's funny for me is that on any given week that can make the price anywhere from $6.99 per pound to $9.99 per pound. Same exact shrimp. Same exact size. Same exact store. It follows no fishing season of which I am aware, since it fluctuates like that year-round.

Can't be picky here, though. If I want shrimp, my choices are raw frozen or cooked frozen farmed shrimp. My size choices are cocktail or 50-60. On very rare occasions we might see the 20-30 size.

That size isn't shrimp, it's bait!

Normally I would say that availability of frozen good-sized Gulf shrimp is because we live in a Columbus suburb but I could get the same shrimp in Rochester, PA, a puny town of about 4,000.  Go figure.

Up to about 2 months ago, we had a guy who rented an indoor space in Shed 2 at the Dallas Farmers Market. He brought fresh seafood up from the gulf every Thursday including fresh
"under 8" Texas gulf shrimp for $11.99 lb. I and all my friends were there every week for those huge fresh shrimp plus oysters and other gulf seafood. But, good things don't last forever.
We went to buy from him one week and, poof! He was gone.
Well, it was great while it lasted.

All I can say is boo hoo.  I would camp out to get fresh Gulf seafood in the morning!  About twice a year Giant Eagle (our supermarket) has fresh never frozen 16-20 Gulf shrimp.  Last time I arrived around 10AM, they were sold out but there's another Giant Eagle about 5 miles away.  We dashed over there and luckily they had them.  Bought 2 pounds @ $9.99.  They were a real treat.

We get fresh Gulf shrimp (21-25) here in Tallahassee all day for $10/pound or less.  Traveling to Eastpoint, 60 miles south, the prices drop significantly, i.e. heads-on 10-15 count at same price.  Traveling 10 miles further on Hwy. 98 S and across beautiful Apalachicola bay, we of course find similar, as well as fresh oysters, all right off the boat.  All in all just a nice day trip in the Florida panhandle.    Back in time @ home to feast!

Alas, them nasty Asian shrimp on the price rise, again.  As always, fresh and/or frozen GULF OF MEXICO shrimp better for you and quite a bargain.  Frozen GOM shrimp probably available near you right now.

Exactly. This week the 36-40 is on sale for $1 off...making it $8.99/pound.

Ed - in the Mexico Beach Beacon Hill area of the panhandle there is "The Old Salty Dog" Shrimp Guy.  He is an "Old Salty Dog" he used to be a captain of a shrimp boat, but now his son runs it.  He has a sign on the highway that points you back to his street.

His son brings him 6 HUGE igloo coolers/ day. unsorted head on for $10-$12/lb.  but if he knows you are local you can get them for usually about $5.00 to $6.00/lb.  They are iced down and ready to clean.

He also sells headless but you pay more for the "service".

I saw some big (16s??) at WalMart. Very expensive, $18/lb, I think. It said they were wild caught, frozen, shell off, uncooked, Sea of Cortez, Mexican shrimp. "The Best in the World" according to the package. The larger and bigger farm raised shrimp are absent. Lots of medium, though.

Go to P'cola and go to Joe Patti's for good fresh off the boat Shrimp. He sometimes has Apalachicola Oysters too. If not THEN you'll need to Eastpoint to get them.

We went to Joe Patti's. All the stuff looked amazing. Unfortunately, the line was like the Matterhorn at Disneyland.

Alas, them nasty Asian shrimp on the price rise, again.  As always, fresh and/or frozen GULF OF MEXICO shrimp better for you and quite a bargain.  Frozen GOM shrimp probably available near you right now.

Just read an article on shrimp today that has the price of Asian shrimp going up. The main countries supplying them are suffering outbreaks of disease that are decimating their stocks and Congress is currently looking into slapping tariffs on them too because they're state subsidised and competing unfairly with our Gulf shrimpers. Look for prices to go up on those imports. I only eat Gulf shrimp so it won't affect me much, but the Red Lobster crowd will be feeling the pinch. Now all we need are more shrimp boats back in the water in the Gulf to make up for the low numbers.

If I want shrimp, I may have one brand of it. I get no choice where in the world it comes from. I choose not to look.
