Getting Comped Sun, 11/14/10 4:31 PM (permalink)
In another thread, I had a memory of getting a free slice of sficnione from a pizzeria pretty much for knowing what it was (it was the first time they had served it). I realized that getting comped with food is by no means an infrequent experience for me; I suspect it's because I like to talk food with the owner.

Anybody here have similar experiences?

Yep, I got a free Burrito at 7-11 because I was talking to the lady behind the counter about the chili they served. You can put all the chili you want on their Burrito. Not bad w/ enough chili! That means their chili is also not bad. Beleive it or not. :~)

I get a free glass of wine when I pick up to-go orders from an Italian restaurant on the next block from my store.  Maybe it's because we're neighbors.

I saw someone at 7-11 buy a Cup 'o Noodles, add hot water from the coffee machine and then load it up at the hot dog counter.  I mean he added salsa, chili, onions and everything else you could think of.

I think this was a case of comping himself.

I get comped multiple items constantly at places I frequent, but I don't think that's what you're talking about.

We have people bring in their own salads and walk over and use our Ranch dressing, they get pissed off at use when its not out.
I have another guy that brings in his own waffle, he uses my toaster, butter, maple syrup. I walked up to him and asked if I could get him anything else, he said he was fine but thanks anyway ( Last time that happened)
last week a lady brought in her own ham, cheese and bread and asked, can you grill this for me.......Guess what my answer was

These sound like lagniappes. Little extras for no reason. I thought comped was something when the other person messed up or something grander like a hotel upgrade in Las Vegas for the high rollers! I have received free soup from restaurants and cookies from the bakery. Whatever you call it, it is nice.

I got a bag full of burgers at the drive-thru when the guy in front ordered and then drove off without his food. I got sick from eating too much.

Actually, that's pretty much it; being given food in a restaurant for free that is not normally given out for free. To give another example, there was a pizzeria where I frequented for a snack slice to play the video games, and an occasional dinner back in the 80's. I often discussed food with the owner, and whenever he had a new dish, he'd give me a portion and ask my opinion. Coincidence time: at one point, when I was working in New York's garment district, there was a lunch place I went to just about every day, as they served hamburgers made on an actual charcoal grill. One day, at the pizzeria, the owner of the lunch place walks in. Turned out that he and the pizzeria owner were brothers. I took my father out to a Greek restaurant for lunch once, and I described in detail what the dishes were. The owner was talking to a wine merchant, and, noticing the conversation, invited us to give our opinions of the wines (as a non-drinker for medical reasons, I demurred, but what my father lacked in knowledge of some international cuisines he made up for in his knowledge of wines). And I have literally dozens more stories like that one. I started this thread wondering if this was unusual for the kind of people who frequent this forum.

Ah, I see.  I get free drinks, food, coffee, etc. pretty much everywhere I go.  I figured they just like me.

The best one was the day my morning coffee shop first purchased their espresso machine.  The two owners and I sat there trying out different recipes until we realized all three of us were chattering at the speed of chipmunks on crack at the same time holding three simultaneous conversations with each other.
