Awww, I'm sorry I missed you guys!  And that's quite a piece of pork at the top!

That's not a piece of pork.  That's a blunt instrument.

That really looked like a Miss Ham 2011 beauty pageant to me, but I'm not sufficiently acquainted with Poverty Pete to know if it was a real contest or not.

Was it an oversized shank or 'Hock' or was it the shank portion of a Ham?? It looks like the latter to me. I don't know of German Butchers divide the Pork Leg into different pieces than the US cutters use...or are they just using a different descriptor for the same cuts?

At any rate, That's a lot of Pork for a $26.00 Entree. I see it would feed several people, but is that piece normally a one-person Entree?

Great pics and meet-up, everybody!  Wish I could have been there!

When I look at PP's schweinshaxsen, I think of that "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" story where a wife bludgeoned her husband to death with a frozen leg of lamb then roasted the weapon and served it to the police investigating the death.  Is everyone from the meet-n-greet present and accounted for?  haha!

I am kinda bummed that Big Eds got mixed reviews...

Ann, I'm going to review it anyway and spotlight the positives.  It wasn't the best breakfast I've ever had, but I didn't expect that.  The place is seething with RF charm, our waitress was beyond wonderful, and the few hits were big ones, especially the sawmill gravy and Paul's link sausage (which I'm still kicking myself for not ordering...).  I think BB has much higher standards for breakfast places than I!    Chris

Ann:  I guess the highlight of Big Ed's was the brains and eggs or the fish eggs.

Strange because no one ate them after they got them.  I had sausage links, grits with red eye gravy and hard fried eggs.  Really good along with the biscuits, butter than jams.

Chris was correct about the server.  She was very good and attentive.  The place was super packed and a long line continually out the door.

Roz got the prize at 42nd St. Oyster.  She negotiated with the manager to reduce a two hour wait to just a few minutes.  She is very very persuasive.

Joe Rogo,
Yes the Glee Club Uniform for at least one appearance is a Hawaiian Beach Shirt. Pov Pete has been doing these gatherings for so long his shirt has faded from age and grease staining to the rag you see in the photo !

For those a bit more observant than Albert, I point out the photo outside Big Ed's, wherein it may be noted that my Hawaiian shirt is clean and stain free.

the schweinehaxen is the joint between the knee and ankle.  Unlike the ham, there is a double bone arrangement, similar the middle section of a chicken wing.  The chef told me that this specimen was unusually large. Somebody else said it weighed 5.3 pounds.  Not only did I not finish it,  but when I went to take the remains out to my car, I had to hoist it onto my shoulder in the manner of Santa Claus loading up a sackful of toys.

Don, "The purpose of the Glee Club is to escape the cold and wintery conditions of our respective states and revel in the good food of a more southern locale over President’s Day weekend."  At least that's how I described it in my forthcoming RFDigest post...  Chris

Re:Glee Club in Raleigh 2011/02/23 15:40:16 (permalink)
The Glee Club ...actual title The Honorable West Tennessee BBQ Society and Glee Club, first met in February of 2004 when a few of us guys got together to follow the suggested itinerary submitted by member Pogophile (Chris) who had studied the Oral History reports of a group of Mississippi College Students. One of their studies dealt with a regional specialty of Western Tennessee--WHOLE-HOG BBQ.
To shorten this story , Several members --Sundancer, Mayor Al, Pov.Pete, Pogophile,Bushie, & JimInKY  met one evening Nashville for dinner, then toured the Lexington/Henderson TN area the following day doing 6 BBQ stops in the one day to sample the product of places visited in the  History Project Report.  A couple of the places were terrible, One of the Glee Club members took a dive at the last stop (a seizure of some type, we think) and went home ranting some odd political stuff that none of us really understood...and withdrew shortly from posting here. It was decided at that point that multiple stops in a crowded agenda was self-defeating in building healthy roadfooders, so we spread the meetings to weekend long  efforts, trying to pick a place that would provide a comfortable atmosphere during the heart of winter.
In 2005 we went back to Tennessee with a focus on Memphis/Beale St.  TIKI and Roz and Mrs Mayor (Janet) joined in the fun that weekend.
In 2006 we visited the Moonlite BBQ in Owensboro KY for an Icy, Snowy Weekend full of good BBQ.
In 2007, We weekended in the Texas BBQ Belt based in Austin,  and toured the Shiner Brewery as well. Lots of good Texas 'Que was enjoyed in Bushies home area.
In 2008, It was in Mobile, Alabama for Oysters AND BBQ !!  Wintzells Oyster House and The Brick Pit BBQ  (soon to be featured in a 30 minute program on the Canadian Food Channel) !!! were the main events that weekend!
2009 saw a return to Memphis, but with a pre-party, party at Doe's Eat Place in Greenville, Mississippi.
Last Year, 2010,  the group was in Charleston, SC. We were not able to participate last year, or at the recent 2011 Raleigh NC Gathering.

Now you know a bit about the short history of what has evolved into the "GLEE CLUB".

This I know.  I have made it every year except last year in Charleston.  Each year has been super although we missed Al and Bushie this year.  Mobile was outstanding, Texas was outstanding, Lexington TN was super and Memphis was outstanding.  Owensboro was very good but crowded.

It make me wonder what next year will be like???

Re:Glee Club in Raleigh 2011/02/23 22:24:15 (permalink)
I'm slow writing my trip reports, sadly, but I'll do what I can to bring up the rear.

Our first stop upon landing in Raleigh was Bavarian Brathaus of Cary, selected by Poverty Pete because it served pork knuckle (schweinshaxen), which is common in Germany but rare in the US. The pork knuckle required a one-day advance notice, which we declined because we thought that the dinner would be before we landed. But the dinner got rescheduled for later, and we came along.

The first course was a tomato salad. This was very tasty, and the tomatoes were pretty good - I liked this a lot.

Through a miscommunication with the waitress, I ended up with ChiTownDiner's Braumeister Gulasch appetizer, when I had intended to order the gulasch dinner. The gulasch was not what I expected from goulash; it was just broth and beef, without any vegetables. But it was delicious; the broth was very savory and rich, with a touch of paprika.

I finally got some of the sides that came with the gulasch dinner: a pair of Semmelknödel. The menu called these bread dumplings, but they didn't have the wet texture I expect from dumplings; they were hemispheres of dense stuffing-like bread, with a crust that made me wonder if they had been deep-fried.

Poverty Pete had ordered a pork knuckle for himself and one for the table, and pork knuckle was by far the most dramatic meal of the table, mostly because it was so large. I sampled a bit of it, and it just tasted like roast pork to me, though it was tender and juicy.

Even after four people had helped themselves to the pork knuckle, the leftovers were still half the size of Chris Ayers' head.

We made lots of jokes about the pork knuckle, such as suggesting that it would need a helmet when Poverty Pete took it home.

Many of the other dishes didn't impress me that much; Gregg's sauerbraten seemed a bit below par to me, as did Lori's bratwurst. I also wasn't wild about the apple strudel for dessert; part of that is that a crust that is not extraordinarily tender will squoosh out the filling under the pressure of a fork, but I also felt that a strudel should have smaller, more tender apple chunks than this contained. Even so, we were off to a good start.

And as an extra bonus, we got to hear the oompah band playing "Puttin' on the Ritz".

The oompah band's playlist was definitely unique and entertaining; no "Roll Out The Barrel," anywhere within earshot.
Bushie's always going off on weird political tangents, but we still love him. The guy having the love affair with John Kerry was TOO rich a target. I HAD to send him into apoplexy.
