Patti Smith's version CLASSIC, one of the best. The Doors did a great job with Gloria as well.....

Van the Man wrote his "Gloria" in 1964. These Doo Wop performances come from a tune that goes back long before that. I love Doo Wop, but Van's tune is much more dear to my heart. I was 17 in 1964. pb

Here in Charm City we heard the Shadows of Knight version of Gloria probably 100 times for every 1 time we heard Van Morrison & Them. Guess it was a regional thing. Great garage rock anthem.

Shadows of Night were from Chicago. I recall a guy in 5th grade who claimed that one of the guys in the band was his cousin. Also recall that Gloria was included on a "paper" record that was attached to a bag of chips! Chestys Chips??

Shadows of Knight was a local band (Chicago area) so that's all we ever heard on the radio. I didn't even know someone else recorded it.

Apparently the Shadows of Knight version outplayed the version by Them in towns (Chicago and Baltimore and others) where the original was too "racy" with the lyrics "And then she comes up to my room." The SoK version substituted "And then she called out my name," which made it by the censors. Hard to imagine.

Chicago radio highly censored the music they played. I can't remember what song it was but there was the lyric about "tripping on LSD" and all we ever heard was "tripping on Lake Shore Drive"
