Going on a cruise?

Just reading about that ship with 3200 passengers and 1100 crew floundering off Mexico.  No electricity--below decks with no A/C will bake you to a turn in a short time.  No cooked food.  Toilets can't flush---------being towed to port and must spend 2 more days on deck in the broiling Pacific sun.  Lots of old timers I
 
The cruise line business is hurting because of the economy---this won't help it one bit.
 
 

I just came off a 12 day cruise in the eastern Mediterranean to Egypt, Turkey, Greece and Italy. We didn't have those discomforts.
 
However, it does reinforce my belief to always upgrade to an outside balcony cabin.

Makes sense Dave----these people are really having a bad time of it.  I know how hot it can get below decks.  And just sitting there bobbing like a cork must have been scary.  At least they aree now under tow and can see the end of a bad experience.

Begs the question, Does a big bear S**t in the ocean, answer is yes, if on a disabeled Cruise ship!

The reports from the ship sound like a lot of hassle and discomfort, (A reporter from the Denver NBC TV station gave a report on the situation on tonight's evening news),  but not quite the castrastrophe we thought was happening.  The Lawyers Limo's will be double parked for blocks from whatever terminal they finally drag that Cruise-ship to. Carnival can kiss their profit-margin goodbye after this disaster...better they should have hit an iceberg !
   Apparently the owners aren't willing to pay the fines for dumping the sewerage or the garbage into the ocean...prefering to keep it on board where it is causing some real issues for many of the 'cheaper accomodations' passengers.

I can't believe the US Coast guard certified a ship that couldn't  provide enough emergency power to provide cooking facilities and hot water. And I can't believe they certified a ship that  couldn't restart its engines after what should have been  a minor emergency. 
 
Once more, regulation takes a back seat to profits.

Yeah...and if the Navy and CG can chopper over food deliveries, why can't they transfer some emergency generators for temporary use??
This has all the makings of a "Cluster F**k" to quote Clint Eastwood's famous line from HEARTBREAK RIDGE.

They could pull the Ronald Reagan up along side and throw over extension cords and light up the whole ship.  Also send over some Boston Baked beans for breakfast with corn bread of course. 
 
Mayor, the smart lawyers will have landed on the ship by helecopter, or
disguised as Navy Seals swum along side and been pulled aboard by associates.  By the time they reach San Diego these smart lawyers will have all the rich people signed up.  The poor ones will have to get public defenders or something.

Having been a submariner for many years, I have experienced being stuck with no A/C for extended periods ( Circulation pumps make noise, can't have that) I can certainly sympathise. Suks to be them because they had to pay to be that uncomfortable. Gotta love all the free spam though.

AND, apparently, all the Bars are open, and free also. Yeah that about says it for the cruise experience...The beach-Bum look taken to the extreme...and all the free booze you can wait in line for in the dark, with non-flushing toilets the only outlet!
 
Thanks, but I'll take a RF Meet-n-Eat at the Circus-Circus Buffet in Las Vegas , Friday night, during the Christmas Holiday week, at 8PM!  If you've ever done that, you'll know how difficult a choice it was to pick Vegas over the cruise !

I disagree with the OP on Cruiseline Business hurting.
Carnival on last earnings above estimates.
Last bad year they have had was '08 and people are going back.
 
Not my idea of a vacation, but others prefer this. Haven't been on a big Cruise boat for 30 yrs.
My idea of a cruise is 8-12 couples on a boat and pick and choose your destinations for the day
 

Last time I was on a large ship Uncle Sam paid the bill. 
 
All the booze you can drink----with no ice----or, warm beer-----
maybe even hot beer.  A steel ship sitting in the hot, hot sun for 16 hours
without moving (before the tow) would have ovens where refrigerators
were a day or so before.   In the tropics the steel gets so hot you can't touch it.  We sat outside the harbors in the Marshall Islands---hot sun, no breeze, no rain-------forgetaboutit.l
