Hello Fellow Food Lovers! I am seeking the advice of the forum for great places to eat in San Francisco. We are willing to try anything new, but want to stay within a budget. Five days to eat our way through the city! Thank you in advance for suggestions!

There are countless great places to eat, but in my opinion, there is only one that is absolutely essential to visit, and that is Swan's Oyster Depot.

Have breakfast at Mama's on Washington Square. You won't be disappointed.

Scoma's offers excellant seafood in a setting on the wharf. Prepare for a wait, as the last time we were there, they were not taking reservations. It's a must, in SF.

I couple of my favorite places include: the hot dog cart across the street from the San Francisco Shopping Centre on Market Street near Powell, Blondie's Pizza (by the slice) just a few yards up Powell from said hot dog cart, Mexican food at Las Estrellas on Gough between Hayes and Fell, The Buckhorn located inside the Metreon on 4th and Mission for Tri-tip sandwiches and just about anything from the Ferry Building Marketplace. Touristy perhaps, but some very good food throughout the entire place. A place that I'm told makes VERY good burgers is Joe's Cable Car at 4320 Mission Street. They grind their own burgers from beef chuck with just enough fat to make it flavorful and moist (or so I've heard). It's the priciest place you'll ever go for a burger, but I'm told that it is worth it.

San Fran's Chinatown has some really great restaurants. There are also some tourist places, like the Empress of China, but those places are both pricy and not very good.

Instead, just look for the restaurants filled with Asians, and you will be assured of a great meal at low cost. The best Dim Sum that I ever had was in San Fran's Chinatown, but unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the place.

Another must, in my opinion, is The Stinking Rose, an Italian/Continental restaurant in the North Beach area. Everything on the menu is made with copious amounts of garlic, and I really enjoyed everything that I ate there. The place is nice and casual and fun-oriented, also.
