The best!! Loved them since I was a kid - we'd eat them raw!! How anyone can compare them to a BallPark is beyond me. The "snap" when you bite into them is music to my ears. Just the right amount of spices, not overpowering like Sabretts (which I love, too). You have to buy them wrapped in brown butcherpaper at 5 pounds at a time, twisted and strung together. I think a butcher in Ridgewood, Queens sells them. Go Golden D's!!

Joeydiver, I'll have to try Golden D again. The only place in Jersey that I know of that serves them is Tony's truck in Branch Brook Park in Newark. The one time I had them they seemed ordinary. I had one after a Sabrett from Chris's truck and before having another Sabrett from JJ's. The dog tasted bland compared to Sabrett. I just found out today that Brooklyn Diner uses Golden D. It is a big (over 1 foot long) frank that costs $13.95 and comes with sauerkraut and onion rings. Maybe this dog tastes considerably better grilled. Ridgewood, Queens is where Karl Ehmer franks are made. Both the beef dog and the German style beef/pork dog are excellent.

Mr. Fox, your're a man to be respected. You have an opinion on Karl Ehmer; but do you have one on those from Forest Pork store? Forest Pork is on Forest ave in Ridgewood and there's one in Huntington LI. My wife ALWAYS buys the Karl Ehmer peanut franks (it's a family thing). For those that don't know, peanut franks are bigger than cocktail franks but smaller than bun franks which are smaller than normal franks. They are about the length of my thumb (I'm holding it up to the screen for you to see, okay? Okay!). I had one from Forest Pork store once and I thought they had a better flavor. I've asked my wife to buy from Forest Pork but she says they are always closed when she goes there. Do you think she's lying? Anyway, how about an opinion on franks from Forest Pork store?

Sorry, I can't give an opinion on Forest Pork Store franks because I haven't had one yet. I've had the Karl Ehmer's because they have a store in Jersey and there at least 2 other places in Jersey on their website (not Karl Ehmer stores) that sell them. With the exception of Thumann's, all of the better German style franks seem to come from Pork Stores or butcher shops. Or places like Karl Ehmers that started out as butcher shops. The franks are now made at one location in Ridgewood and distributed to their stores. But made from the same original recipes. As good as their German franks are, their beef franks are outstanding as well. For me, they are in the same league as Usinger's and the Syd's dog. I have heard that there is a place somewhere in Brooklyn that makes excellent German franks. A company with a Polish name. I'll have to find out. Someone from work told me about this one. I hope to try the dogs from the Forest Pork Store. Almost every pork store I've been to makes excellent hot dogs.

John, do you have an address for the Brooklyn Diner? I tried a search and came up with a bunch of them.... Kozel, if you can find a Schaller & Weber, they make a great cocktail brat, since you like the peanut franks...give them a try... Joey [ The dog tasted bland compared to Sabrett. The Brooklyn Diner is located at 212 West 57th Street; (212) 977-2280. For $13.50 you get a dog that weighs almost a pound, and comes with onion rings and sauerkraut with juniper berries.
