Good Breakfast place in the Northern Virginia/DC area Sun, 09/19/10 10:41 AM (permalink)
I'm originally from Michigan, and been living in Alexandria VA for about 5 years.  I still don't know of any good breakfast places in the Northern Virginia area and was wondering if yall could help me out.

The only breakfast place I have been to is the Table Talk Restaurant on Duke Street in Alexandria. I found it to be above average but not exceptional.

are you talking regular breakfast, or brunch? DC isn't typically a breakfast place, but it is a weekend brunch mecca.

now, I can't speak too much for No. Va, but DC has some solid breakfast spots.

In No Va, there's Weenie Beenie - a hotdog stand that produces abnormally good breakfast sandwiches (and the 2nd best half-smokes in DC area - which is one spot ahead of Ben's Chili Bowl) Shirlington.

And there's Bob and Edith's - kind of greasy spoon, drive-in in Arlington.

Breakfast Mon-Fri is typically a light meal, and local chain Firehook Bakery has some nice baked goods in the morning - and they'll put together a breakfast sandwich on a croissant (IMO, the croissant is the best part)

Like I said, I have some DC favs for breakfast food, and many brunches that are quite good - which is what DC is known for on the weekends. Champagne brunch IS the weekend fare for DC. But we have our pancake, eggs and homefries places, too.

Are you willing to come into the city?

Have you yet been here right in Alexandria (on

North St. Asaph Street) and for GREAT breakfasts?:

Yes I'm willing to come into the city or elsewhere in the DMV area.
And I've been to Bob and Edith's.  It was pretty good.  I think I need to go again just to see if it was a fluke.

I remember going to the Royal Restaurant in Old Town in the 1980s many times, for both breakfast and lunch.  I went there one morning for a late breakfast, after having just returned from a business trip, and they were kind enough to fix sauteed chicken livers for me, even though they weren't on the menu that day. (They were delicious.)

But my recollection is that the place either changed hands, or just changed, in the 1990s, and I don't recall that it was that good -- or at least, not as quirkily distinctive --  after that.

I'd love to go back sometime and try it again.

A few years ago I was in DC and went to the Florida Avenue Grill for breakfast, based on the Roadfood recommendations.  Make sure you have the ham with the redeye gravy. It was awesome!

The local PBS station just ran a one hour show dedicated to Breakfast in DC.......I was very surprised to see how many great looking places serve a top notch breakfast......

Try and catch it, it was aired on WETA.
