I am fortunate to have a non- chain locally owned grocery store in a town not far from me.
in the deli, they pressure fry chicken all day. i recently picked up a fried chicken breast, paid all of ninety cents for it.
brought it home and reheated it in the oven. People, what can I say. it was crispy and non greasy on the outside, moist, tender and perfectly seasoned meat. i was in heaven, and I'm picky about my chicken. I can't remember if i ever had better chicken anywhere. At that price who would expect perfection? Not a big surprise, but everything this store makes is heaven, subs, quiche, homemade soups, mac and cheese, etc.
Funny how you can find heaven in the most unexpected places.
        The true roadfood credo, right?

Sundancer, if you're going to the Loveless just take I-40 on past downtown toward Memphis. Then take exit 192 (McCrory Lane) turn left when you get to Hwy 100. The Loveless is about 100 yards up on the left. If you want to visit another neat place along a scenic drive hop onto the Natchez Trace Pkwy (1/2 mile west of the Loveless) and drive down to Lieper's Fork. A beautiful drive to an interesting little community.

Easily the best fried chicken I've ever had was at The Blue and White in Tunica Mississippi. Michael goes on about the chicken and dumplings and the country ham breakfast but once you try that chicken there are no other choices to be made.

After living in Nashville for two years I finally went to the Loveless Cafe, which was closed for renovations for quite some time. While the biscuits and sides were excellent, I was not impressed with the fried chicken. The breading had a vey good flavor but the meat tasted like convenience store chicken because it was deep fried. They clearly put a lot of effort into their food, I just don't care for the flavor deep drying gives chicken. I'll definitely go back, I just won't get the chicken.

If you ever find yourself in Sweetwater, Texas (home of the "world famous" World's Largest Rattlesnake Roundup - which oddly draws in thousands of tourists from every part of the globe each March) you MUST try Allen's Fried Chicken on Broadway. They're only open for lunch, and only serve home-style. But my-oh-my. Absolutely fantastic.

If.....you are ever in the Seattle area....and if you really like chicken it might be worth the trip Check out Ezell's Chicken http://www.ezellschicken.com/ This Chicken is prepared exactly the way you like and the sides are Kick-a** (just like Mom's) The only problem I have ever had with the place is the staff....they ain't friendly and just seem plain burned out (Lynnwood Location).. my friends agree. Though, when you are sinking your teeth into your first bite...all is forgotton Oprah loves the chicken as well. She has been known to fly chicken to her and have Ezell cater parties for her. She is always raving about the "Sweet Potatoe Pie" must be good...don't like it myself

Best fried chicken is in Jacksonville, Florida at a little hole-in-the-wall called Beach Road Chicken Dinners. It has been around forever.

There is a link to an article on it from the Washington Post in the "Where To Eat" forum.

Noticed a few folks nominating McDonald's cafeteria in Charlotte and lamenting its closure. Charlotte lost two great chicken places in past few years. McDonald's is now a nursing home and the cafeteria went out of business because the owner was a great cafeteria operator but his expansion into owning a hotel and amusement park just didn't work out. All are on the same site just off I-85 at Beatty's Ford Rd

Coffee Cup has changed owners two or three times in the past four years. The food is still good but not great anymore. I used to eat there two or three times a month but haven't been there in over a year. Have no wants to go back either. It's gotten relatively expensive and the quality has dropped.

I strongly recommend Del Rhea's Chicken Basket on Rte. 66 in Willowbrook, IL, about 40 minutes west of Chicago. As I mentioned in another thread:

I loved this place...some of the best fried chicken out there and the home-made biscuits are heavenly. Our server told us they get their chickens from a particular supplier. They taste the way chicken used to taste, not shot-through with hormones. I think they used to have live blues on the weekend. Sometimes, I feel like driving the 5 hours plus just to taste their chicken.

We have a place here in town called the Shrimp Boat that has the best fried chicken ever. Their shrmip and other seafood is also good, but the chicken is better than any I have tried anywhere. This is the place where all of the local police and fire departments and the mail carriers meet for lunch, so it is sometimes rather crowded, but it is worth the wait for the chicken.

I couldn't agree more. Great fried chicken - as a matter of fact the only fried chicken I eat. If you think KFC is good, you know nothing about fried chicken.
The staff at Ezell's is probably the worst you will ever find anywhere and it is important to check your order before leaving the place. All is worth it. The stuff is great.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this place, but I've been to the Family House Restaurant in Breezewood PA a couple times, and they have some of the best fried chicken I've ever tasted. If you're in the Breezewood area some time, check it out.

The fried chicken at Buntyn's in Memphis is great, and don't skip the yeast rolls that come with your meal, either... they're a fluffy piece of heaven. Good peach cobbler, too.

Here in the Dayton/Cincinnati, OH area, good fried chicken is a little harder to come by, I suspect. So far, I like Bunny's Hasty Tasty Pancake House. Could do with more pepper, IMO, but it's good and portion is huge. Your dinner order is basically half a chicken.

The Greyhound Tavern in Ft. Mitchell, (Northern) Kentucky serves up pretty good fried chicken. The Southern Kitchen in Erlanger, KY has good fried chicken too as well as real good cathead biscuits.

                                              Hola!

Ever just thought of driving through the smaller towns outside of Knoxville that do not have a KFC and look around? The good fried chicken in smaller communities were diners and gas station outlets.

The best fried chicken in the world was at the Primmadonna Hotel and Casino in Stateline, NV (I-15). I worked there in the early 1990s and the flavor of that chicken was incredible. If you are ever travelling from LA to Vegas or vice versa, stop in there.

I always mean to get out there. Maybe someday when gas prices fall...

Does Broasted count? If so, the Chic-n-Dip in Hampshire, IL has some terrific broasted chicken. Very moist and well seasoned chicken breasts and wings (not much of a dark meat man).I just moved into the area (60 miles west of Downtown Chicago) and have discovered that many of the local establishments pride themselves on their broasted chicken, maybe it is a smalltown Midwestern thing. I have seen Broasted chicken on a restaurant menu for 25 years and now I can't seem to get away from it.

The best fried chicken I ever had was in Statesboro Georgia in the mid 1970's @ Joe's Diner. This place was located just outside of town and wrong side of tracks according to locals.
I had been traveling through the South and wanting to taste the best southern chicken after being disappointed time again even with the Marriot Hotel chain.
Never again have we had chicken as great as this hole in the wall shack produced and would give any thing to have their recipe as now they are long gone.
