Good Pizza in Baltimore

Okay, so who can help me find a place in Baltimore that makes decent pizza? I'm going up on Sunday, June 4th.

Balto has a Little Italy. So there's a bunch of places right in there that have great pizza.

    Check out these links:

Although it's not the best pizza I've ever tasted, Matthew's Pizza in Highlandtown (Eastern Ave) has a very rich history and is very "roadfoody". Try the Margherita pizza...not listed on the menu as I recall, but my favorite of the varieties I've tasted. They do a good salad there as well, and the prices are very reasonable. And afterward, go to Fells Point and walk along the water -- fun!

I would also add that Bmore is known for great crab more than it is for pizza. For a real taste of Bmore, go to one of the crab houses (Bo Brooks, Olde Obryki's) and have a crab feast. Costs more than pizza but is a unique taste of MD.

Couldn't agree more. I lived in BMORE for over 20 years and have yet to find really good Pizza. Just a bunch of average wantabees. If you must find good pizza (and if you are driving), I would suggest that you travel 40 miles south and check out the spots in the D.C. area. Look under the "SOS:Any good Pizza/Subs in Northern Virginia" thread in this section. Several posts list good spots in Maryland & D.C. (as well as VA of course). Hope this helps.

I know I'm too late to help the OP, but by now he probably has found out there is no good pizza in Baltimore.

Scorereader, I don't think there's been pizza available in Little Italy since DeNittis closed around 20 years ago.

The only place I will actually "go" for pizza is PIZZA JOHNS on Back River Neck Road in Essex. Good crisp crust and very heavy on the toppings. Meat sauce and sliced right there pepperoni are the standouts.

No, there's a place that sells slices in Little Italy, 'cuz I got a slice a couple months ago. It wasn't "oh my god good," but it's the best pizza in Balto that I know of.

Next time I go up there, I'll have to find the place again so I can post the name and location.

Scorereader, next time you are planning a visit to Little Italy, let me know, and we'll try to find this place together. There's a small carry out at the corner of High and Eastern that seems to have been there forever, but I only remember stopping there once to buy a lottery ticket. I'll have to do a little recon mission. There was a deli next to DaMimmo, but I don't remember pizza there, and they are now out of business. There also was once a Little Italy Carryout on Eastern near Central, but they sold whole pies only.

I do get down there frequently in the warmer months.

hmmmm.... well, I'm not sure. Maybe I've lost my marbles. You are making me question my memory.

I'm going to do some research. Otherwise, my hair will be pulled.

OK. I got it. It was "Il Scalino" on High Street.
It was a deli and market, and sold paninis and sicilian pizza in the back.

Anyway, it was ok. Quick fix. As others have said, I wouldn't go to Balto for the pizza when there are many crabs and crabcakes to be had.

I have my favorite places, most of which are in Fells Point, because that's where my good friends live (in the old canery building at the end of Thames Street, near the Red Star.

That must have been the deli I was talking about next to DaMimmo. I knew I never saw any neopolitan pizza there. I was surprised they lasted as long as they did.

Let me know when you are available. How about a trip to Essex?

Well it was a visit to Pizza Johns that I had in mind, but maybe we can scope out an alternative place for the Crabcake Meet scheduled for August 24th.

I just checked Pizza John's out on the web. Actually, it looks pretty cool. I'd be into that.

When are you guys looking to go to Essex? If it's on a weekend, I might be interested. I'm in Las Vegas this weekend, and may be up in upstate NY the second weekend in July, but other than that, I should be around. Let me know if you want some company!!

I'm pencilling it in on my calendar. Hopefully Joanie will check in and can make it as well.

As for time, I'm totally flexible to meet your schedule.

Scorereader and Signman, the 30th is better for me, too. However, I do work that day, I think, so later is better for me as well.

Just keep me posted, either on this forum, or use the email function on here to contact me. That Comcast account is still active. This sounds like fun!!

Welcome to Roadfood. If you are free on the evening of June 30th a few of us will be meeting for pizza and subs at Pizza Johns in Essex, which IMHO, is the among the best places in town. I see you are in Towson, not too far from me, could carpool if you like.
