Can someone recommend some really good restaurant websites? Doesn't matter where. I haven't seen a single decent restaurant website ANYWHERE! Thanks. OM

I am not a pro in the graphics design area, but I like websites that make it easy to check out the menu and prices for a place before we visit it... or include some reviews by local media to help explain the place. Since one of my favorite Roadfood Stops is the Moonlite BBQ in Owensboro,KY I'll include their website as an example of one I like. www.moonlite.com

The first thing I go to in any restaurant site is the menu. I like to see pics of the actual item being described (hint, hint...).

To see a lot of restaurant websites, go to http://www.saucecafe.com/restguide.php , then select a Cuisine such as "American" and "GO". All of the listings with a logo have a website, so click away.

Yes, they are regional, but that does not appear to be a criteria for the poster. In fact, s/he states "Doesn't matter where." The poster is asking for websites, not restaurants.

Dinosaur BBQ has a nice website and three locations; Rochester, Syracuse (the original), and New York City (the newest). This is not a chain, but a really good BBQ place which has expanded slowly over about 20 years. All three locations are closely watched and managed by the original founder. Dinosaur BBQ has been reviewed on Roadfood.com and received kudos from several posters for their food. http://www.dinosaurbarbque.com/

QM2, I can understand you wanting to find a "good" website, but after viewing the examples posted by the members here I fail to appreciate what it is that 'makes a good website'. Perhaps you could describe the characteristics that would make one "good" in your judgement? The Mayor

Thanks for the reply. I was searching the web for good restaurant websites. When I came accross your website and decided to make my original post. I'm a web designer and have a restaurant customer. I was looking for some inspiration. 'Good' in my judgement. Well it's one of those things hard to define. :) The best example I've come accross is: www.taorestaurant.com OK... it's all Flash. But... I really think it's smooth and sophisticated.

I had been thinking along the same lines as The Mayor, but now I understand what you are looking for. You are interested in the restaurant web site as art, a marketing tool, and as a courious professional. Most of us were thinking food. I, for one, now appreciate your situation. Today "everyone" is a web designer thanks to software, and web design is now done more by amatures than pros. I appreciate the "art" and skill involved in that taor restaurant site that you posted, but as a simple customer, I like the simple "justus" site better. To echo an earlier poster, I have dialup at home, and appreciate sites that have a simple home page with basic info, that loads quickly. Put the high bandwidth stuff on other pages. An Example: www.bullrunrestaurant.com or www.cockenkettle.com . Not to advertise, but my own site www.millburytravel.vacation.com is a "do it myself" site based on a template provided by my consortium, Vacation.com. I have other options that have been offered to me over the years that cost from $6.95 to over $7000 a month. As a small business person who talks to other travel agents, I know of a few who have done well on the web, but for most, after the initial few dollars, web spending does not give very good returns. Maybe the typical small restauranter feels the same way. BUT.....you have me thinking!!

thanks for the reply. it's always a balance... you can't spend a kings ransom on a website if you are a small business. my worst enemy: your best friend. everyone always has a best friend (brother, cousin, best friend etc) who can do web 'design'. i think you should always get a professional to do a website. owners should think of it as an investment that will be paid back in business. :)

Two thoughts about Flash. 1) I hate Flash intros... they add nothing to the experience... nothing but annoying dancing baloney. Too many coders get caught up in the gee whiz and forget about the mission of the website. 2) A lot of your viewers will not have Flash. Many large corporations and government agencies do not allow Flash on their machines. My employer is one... the IT department has all PCs locked down tight. When I go to the website you thought was great, all I see is a gray screen. Nothing else. Defeats the purpose of the website.
