Ponderosa closes in Grand Rapids

Updated: Oct 4, 2007 05:17 PM

GRAND RAPIDS - Both Ponderosa Steakhouse locations in the Grand Rapids area will close Sunday when their leases expire.

The Plano-Texas based restaurant chain made the decision to close the Alpine and 28th Street locations as part of a strategic decision " about where to end our leases, where to add new locations, and where it makes sense to remodel existing restaurants as we aggressively update the brand in the years ahead," they said in a statement.

Patrons with gift cards can use them at any other Ponderosa Steakhouse or Bennigans Grill & Tavern restaurants.

I am only amazed they've lasted this long. Service was crappy, food was crappier, and the prices were ridiculous.

Maybe they'll put something decent in their place to give me more options. Of course, the one on Alpine has been there so long without a remodel they'd probably be better off blowing the whole thing up and starting over.

I wonder how much longer Ponderosa will be around in the St. Louis area. I ate at the one in St. Peters a few months ago - ripped up booths, stained ceiling tiles, dirty, and poor service. I'd bet the kitchen of the place looked like an episode of "Kitchen Nightmares." Seems to be representative of the chain whenever I have ate there.

There was one on Broadway in San Antonio, near the ButterKrust Bread Factory, and another one on
Naco-Perrin on the northeastside.both are gone. There might be one in San Marcos on I-35North,unless that is a Western Steer Steakhouse. Or maybe they were Bonaza SteakHouses. One or the other company was associated with Dan Blocker the actor from the tv show and a native of O'Donnel,Tx.
