Goodbye, old friend - final Berghoff meal

My uncle and I arrived at the Berghoff at 10:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27. There were at least 40 people ahead of us in line on the sidewalk. If we had arrived five minutes later, there would have been twice as many people ahead of us. The wait wasn't too long, as we got in shortly after 11:00. We had wienerschnitzel and pot roast, German and mashed potatoes with gravy and an extra order of creamed spinach. Despite the impending loss of their jobs, the staff delivered a superb meal with the usual fine service. I savored the Berghoff's own root beer, which surely ranks among the best sodas ever made. The place oozes history and atmosphere. Sadly, they don't make 'em like this in the 21st century.

When my family ate at the Berghoff, my son ordered the root beer. He thought it was the best root beer he had ever drunk When we had a layover at O'Hare last May, he was very happy when we discovered the Berghoff's in the United Terminal and he downed two bottles of that special root beer. Sigh!

A sad day...maybe I'm wrong but I think you can still buy the root beer from Huber's in Monroe, WI.
