Goombas Pizza

Goombas is a new pizzeria that opened a few blocks from my home in Union, N.J. The pizza is good, and was given a good review by the Star Ledger's Munchmobile. I asked if they made an Italian Hot Dog. They do, but it's not on the menu. It wasn't available when I went because they were out of pizza bread. That's a good sign as almost all pizzerias use sub rolls.

I had an Italian Hot Dog this past weekend. It is easily the best Italian Hot Dog I've had at a pizzeria. This includes Joe's in Union (my previous favorite), Dickie Dees, and all the rest. In fact it is one of the best Italian Hot Dogs I've had pizzeria or not. The bread is from Columbus bakery in Newark. Authentic pizza bread. Hot dogs from Best's. 8 to a lb and they stuffed what looks like 3 of them in there. Big slices of both red and green peppers well done. And potatoes sliced thin and fried perfectly. These are similar to Tommy's in Elizabeth. This sandwich was the heaviest Italian Hot Dog I've had. Everything blended together well and tasted excellent. I would guess it cost about $6.00 and change. Not sure of the exact price as I bought a few slices of pizza as well.

I hope Goombas continues to serve an Italian Hot Dog. The one I had rivals the 2 or 3 best in Jersey, is more filling, and within walking distance of my home. I'll be back.

Goomba's; isn't that the name of the place in Florida where the owner, a guy who was in witness protection, attacked a customer who was complaining?

Yeah, it is. I googled it. There must be 50 pizza joints named "Goomba's", it's like "Antonio's"!

Pizzerias are going after the Italian connotation though - not a Nintendo character - I would think -  but with all the kids eating there who would really know who they are trying to appeal to, eh?

Do you have a complete address for Goombas.

Sounds like all the right stuff for an Italian Hot Dog.

I passed there on Sunday and it looked busy.  Never thought to stop.  Now that I know they have a good Italian Hot Dog, I will make it a point to get there soon.

Exactly; a well balanced meal if there ever was one. And best washed down with beer; a healthy drink containing pure water, barley, yeast, and hops.
