Just read a report over at LTHForum.com that the Sunset Foods (a local, high-end grocery store)  location in Libertyville is being remodeled to include a Graeter's Ice Cream Parlor!

Next summer I might only need to drive a few miles up the road to get me some Peach Ice Cream.  In fact, given Libertyville's halfway(ish) location between Milwaukee and Chicago, Graeter's could become a new meeting point for The Contingent.

I had a two-scoop helping of their Black Cherry the other day. Our stash of Peach is down to one and a half pints.

Karl,
Blueberries are about #5 on my list of berry flavor favorites.... BUT, That Blueberry Pie Ice Cream IS my favorite Graeters flavor !! It does very well in a two scoop waffle-cone with a scoop of Peach !!

Al, that's the number one flavor I want but still have not seen in Dallas. Bummer!

Re:Graeter's Peach 2015/06/06 01:33:03 (permalink)
It's been two years since the start of this thread, and thanks to the recently opened Graeter's outpost in Northbrook, IL, I have finally had the opportunity to try their Peach Ice Cream.  I won't say it's the best Peach Ice Cream I've ever tasted, but it's certainly in the top two.  The other contender is Cunis Candies in the far south suburbs of Chicago.

The Contingent was introduced to Cunis by our old friend carolina bob as he led a Tour of Chicago's South Suburbs way back in 2009.   Here's what I wrote about Cunis' Peach Ice Cream back then:

The sign in the window proudly declared that fresh peach ice cream was back in season, leaving me with no choice but to get a single generous scoop in a sugar cone.  What struck me first was the color.  A deep, intense reddish orange that drew you into the ice cream so you could almost taste it before you put it in your mouth.  Once it finally did hit my tongue it didn't disappoint.  It fairly screamed "PEACH" at you.  The flavor was absolutely spot on, obviously made with fresh peaches, no artificial enhancers, just pure sweet fruit, a little sugar, eggs and cream.  Perfect.  I would put Cunis' peach ice cream up against Homer's (a famous ice cream joint in Wilmette, Illinois, renowned for their peach ice cream, in case you weren't familiar) much vaunted version any day of the week.  I even picked up a couple pints of their strawberry and peach ices to take home.  Sampled both late last night and was very happy with my purchase.

It's been six years since I tried Cunis' Peach Ice Cream, so it's tough to make an objective comparison with Graeter's.  Let's just say I wouldn't kick either one of 'em outta bed if they showed up unannounced.

BTW, I took advantage of Graeter's "second scoop for 75 cents" deal, opting for a scoop of Bananas Foster.  Now that was was some tasty ice Cream!  I was practically lifted out of my chair and transported to Brennan's on Royal Street with the first spoonful.

I'm greatly looking forward to the Watermelon Sorbet, Key Lime, and Blueberry Pie flavors coming later this summer and fall.

Budreaux I will trade you all my watermelon for your key lime.  I am glad you finally got Graeter's up there.  Does that store have a bakery attached?

If so you must try the cheese crowns.  A 1/2 cinnamon roll and 1/2 cream cheese danish.  MY FAVORITE!

No trade CK; Key Lime is my absolute favorite kind of pie.

No bakery at the Northbrook location, but I'm sure there are more Graeter's stores planned for the
Chicago area.  Maybe a future location will serve the cheese crowns.

A tip for enjoying Graeter's peach ice cream even more. Let the carton sit out for a while or, bung it in the microwave for about 5 seconds. This allows the peaches to unfreeze a bit and become softer rather than frozen hard. Much more enjoyable that way.

That may have been the key to my slight disappointment.  Although it was served fresh from the cooler, presumably at the "ideal" temperature, it was still a bit too cold, not allowing the full flavor to reveal itself.

Your daughter and son in law and I almost DIED in a freak storm on the way to Cunis a few years ago.

That said I am fairly certain they put crack in that peach ice cream. And you would not have any trouble getting me or anyone in your family back to Cunis.

After a disappointing experience with Graeter's Peach ice Cream (not bad, mind you, just not the transcendent experience I was expecting), a return trip last night for the current seasonal flavor, Watermelon Sorbet, was more than satisfying.  Everything the Peach flavor lacked was made up for in the current offering.

If you like Watermelon, you will absolutely love Graeter's Watermelon Sorbet.  It takes the flavor of ripe Watermelon, the sweetest part, running right down the center of the melon, and amps it up threefold.  It is the flavor of summer in a bowl.  Intense, yet light and refreshing; the perfect treat on a hot humid night in the Midwest.

Buddy

P.S. If the next seasonal flavor. Key Lime Pie is as good as the Watermelon Sorbet, I will be a very very happy boy.

I have avoided the watermelon, and now I am stuck on their madagascar bourbon vanilla or the oregon strawberry.

I cant wait for the key lime to make its appearance, it it is like the blueberry pie then we will BOTH be happy.... very happy

I tried Banana chocolate chip last night, it was really good. Some of the chips were the size of a small candy bar. We have been wearing out our rewards card.

CajunKing,
You'll be interested to know, my daughter, abe_froeman, tried what appeared to be a limited edition flavor: Cheese Crown Chocolate Chip!  That's right, Graeter's Ice Cream with their signature Cheese Crown Pastry mixed in with huge chunks of their smooth Chocolate Chips.

I know you speak lovingly of the Cheese Crown Pastry and knew you'd be interested/envious in hearing of this new flavor.

I know exactly where to get my cheese crown fix but my nearest graeters is 30 minutes away.
Our krogers almost never gets the specialty flavors, on great occaisions they do but not to often.
