Granite State Potato Chips

There was a time in my youth when there were dozens of small potato chip manufacturers. I remember Wonder Chips in Salisbury, MA (gone)Royal Feast in Methuen, MA (might be gone) and the old standby, Granite State on rte. 28 in Salem, NH. My Dad always sprang for a good chip. And so far, my friends, Granite State is STILL GOING. You have to stop by there to get a box or pail, or at least a bag of these chips the way they used to taste. It's a humble roadside gem, with a framed b&w photo of Eisenhower munching some chips with a grin on his face. The warm chips come out from the fryer to be scooped into a box so full that chips could spill everywhere unless you ate two handfuls immediately. Please visit and keep this dying industry alive. (One cannot live by Cape Cod chips alone...)

There is NOTHING like just-made, and freshly-salted potato chips. We recently spent a lot of time at Harry Caray's in Chicago, where they have plates of them on the bar for munching (the best encouragement for beer sales ever), but I think my all-time favorite chips are Fitzgerald's in South Dakota.

My husband who is from Dracut, Mass. (not far from Granite State chips) introduced me to them years ago. As we now live in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, I don't get down to Salem very often. It's good to know it's still in business!

I used to work (very briefly) as a kitchen scullery boy at Cafe Nero in Remsen NY (Sadly out of business).
They made great garlic potato chips, extra crispy and brown. My favorite meal was black bean soup and fresh potato chips.

Can't anybody tell me what happened to my beloved State Line potato chips, (formerly) made in Wilbraham, MA? I miss them so. Gone but not forgotten.

Your state line chips can still be found in mass but are not longer made in mass. Back of the package says "Product of Canada". Made by the John M Boyd company.

I got a good laugh....Salembrewer, who started off this topic mentioned that GRANITE STATE chips had a photo of Eisenhower. It was probably during his administration that they last cleaned their fryer! No, age does not make the chip taste better.

I grew up in the Lawrence/Methuen area and remember Granite State and Roal Feast oh so well. I can tell you that as of about a year ago, Royal Feast was still open and in business as my wife & I stopped in to enjoy a LARGE bag. They were real good but somehow, not quite as good as I remembered. I also remembered Granite State as being my favorite of the two so we headed to Salem but alas, it was Sunday & they were closed. I'll be back in NE this December & will try again!

Interesting! I've never heard of the John M. Boyd company!

State Line is definitely closed down, at least their factory in Wilbraham...I remember seeing it vacan and overgrown a number of years ago. Boyd was another local brand, used to have a plant near the West Lynn Creamery in Lynn, I am pretty sure it is gone now.

Does anyone know if Granite State chips are sold at retail stores in Boston/Central MA? I don't recall seeing them.
