Gray's Papaya in NYC closed

Just read on line that my favorite Manhattan Hot Dog joint, Gray's Papaya on 8th Avenue, has closed. I know there are differing opinions on the dogs at this place but I always found them hot, fresh, and tasty, not to mention a great spot for people watching. Back in the day it was always a great stop for me on my way to Penn Station after an evening of after-work "Happy (Several) Hours".

Ken: An earlier generation of us "Happy hour" patrons used to favor Nedick's . Looking back, I think their hot dog and juice were awful - but who cares after bounteous portions of ardent spirits after work?

I enjoyed Nedick's years back, or at least thought I did, but a few years back they reopened one in Penn Station, promising it was as good as original. It wasn't very good, so perhaps like Ken and John, my memories were clouded by other factors.

Personally I won't miss that location as I never had a good dog from there.  They tended to be overdone and somewhat shriveled as a result and I've had a few stale buns from there.  My favorite location has always been the one at 6th Avenue & 8th Street in Greenwich Village.

Nah, Nedick's used to be good. The Nedicks in Grand Central was always my first stop when I took the train in, and my last stop when heading back. I've been told the new version doesn't come close.

The best thing about Nedicks was the orange drink.

I never tried Gray's Papaya but there are other "papayas".  Did Gray's serve Sabrett dogs like Chelsea Papaya, the one with which I am most familiar (23rd & 7th Ave)?

That was good! My dad used to get us to behave while doing boring errands with promises of a nice Nedick's orange drink. I can still see it cascading down the sides of those glass coolers with all the condensation running down the sides on hot days. I dreamed of having one of those coolers at home when I was a boy.

Yes, Gray's, Papaya King, and the other knockoffs serve Sabrett beef franks. Most serve the natural casing 10 to a lb, but one of the knockoffs I've been to, either Mike's, Chelsea, or another one serves the skinless dog. I don't have a preference between Papaya King and Gray's. Both use the same dog, but one could be better than another on any given day. Maybe the bun falls apart at one; maybe the dog is fresher at another.

For this type of dog let me sugest two places in Jersey that are consistently good. Papaya King in Clifton, where the dogs are always fresh and the owner is there. And Boulevard Drinks in Jersey City.

Papaya describes the type of establishment and the food served. I was more of a Orange Julius kind of guy in Times Square...
Manhattan has many Ray's pizza places. They are related only by virtue of the style of pizza they serve.
Another example is in the S.F Bay Area where there are many restaurants named Joe's. None are related, but the portions are great.

In the beginning, there was Papaya King, founded in 1931 by a greek named Gus Poulos.  It was a juice bar, but they soon added hot dogs.  The original is still open at 3rd Ave & 86th St.  The family has opened and closed other locations over the years, and tried to franchise it.  From what I can tell, there is another location in NYC on 125th St.  There also is one in Clifton, NJ, and in Portland, ME.  All the others are rip-offs of the name.  From what I can tell, Gray's Papaya was started in 1973, and currently has 2 locations in NYC.

I can now confirm that those Nedick's opened a few years ago by Riese have all been replaced by Nathan's franchises.

I went to Papaya King in Clifton a few months after they opened. Worst chilidog I ever had. Stale bun, the chili tasted canned, and the fries were worse than frozen ones I've taken out of a toaster oven. I read somewhere here, that they have a new owner. Are they any better than they were?
