Yessir, right here in Portsmouth, Ohio is one of the few great footer stands remaining in Appalachia. U.S. 23 runs from the north end of Michigan to south Florida so a lot of folks travel through here.

You actually have to go into town to get your good footer with sauce, though. The "Dairy Bar" (90% of their sales is "footers with everything," which is sauce, onion and mustard) is on the west end of Second Street, down on the Ohio River and is fairly easy to access.

I've been trying to duplicate their sauce for about 12 years and NO LUCK YET. So I just keep going there and eating them, "Gimme three everything [you don't even have to say 'footer']." They're about $1.35 apiece -- the best deal south of Columbus, folks. Steamed bun too!

That sounds like a good reason for a road trip from the Columbus area. Now, if only Harold's hadn't burned down. That place had the best fries -- cut to order when your order was turned in. And great coffee, too.

It's worse than that -- Harold himself is dead! That big old fellow was a pal of mine. His dad was a local doctor and my mom was his nurse. Harold use to feed us at his home all the time on U.S. Route 23, just north of town.

Harold made his real money on 2 signature items, his pizza and his Florentine dressing. (I have the recipe!) The latter made him millions as he was the inventor. Harold was trained in Europe and you could sure tell.

Anyway, you can be here from Columbus in 90 minutes. Stay on Route 23 all the way, right on to downtown Portsmouth (Chillicothe Street is Old 23), ignore the Route 23 detours (because of the new bridge which you won't cross anyway). When you run out of street as you go south on Chillicothe street, turn right. You're on second street (The streets are counted as they parallel from the Ohio River). Go about 4 or 5 blocks and the hot dog place is on your right. If you're there at lunchtime, you'll see the folks lined up at the 2 windows.
